Daniele’s Pizza – The Best Pizza in The East of Singapore

Daniele’s Pizza is a pizzeria founded by Pizza Chef Daniele Colaiacomo. Born in Rome, Italy, he honed his pizza-making skills in Rome, UK, USA and finally landed in Singapore. After a stint at a high-end pizzeria and a few years in the private club in Singapore, Pizza Chef Daniele settled down in Changi Business Park.

Daniele's Pizza
With more than 25 years of experience, Daniele has perfected his dough, which requires 36-48 hours of fermentation, creating a light pizza dough topped only with quality ingredients. This is Pizza Chef Daniele’s passion for delivering only the best pizza.

Owner & Pizza Chef Daniele Colaiacomo
Daniele’s Pizza serves Pizze Rosse (tomato sauce base pizza), Pizze Bianche (cheese base pizza), Pizzini (pizza sandwiches), Pastas and Antipasti (starters). The standard pizza size is 12 inches, but Daniele’s served 10 inches version during weekday lunchtime, Mondays to Fridays, 11.00 – 14.30.

Menu P1
Menu P2
Pizza Parma ($24) – Tomato Sauce. Mozzarella Cheese, Parma Ham, Rocket Salad and Parmesan. The pizza comes in two parts. The first part is the hand stretch dough, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese that went into the oven. Once it is out, the additional toppings of Parma Ham, Rocket Salad and Parmesan complete the pizza.

Pizza Parma
When I hold a slice of the pizza, I can feel the light and crispy crust, followed by a moist and heavy part of the pizza as it is filled with the toppings. Once I bit into the middle part, I can taste the overflowing tomato sauce and savour the rest of the delicious toppings. Yummy!!

Pizza Parma per Slice
Pizza Burrata ($24) – Tomato Sauce, Burrata Cheese and Cherry Tomatoes. We usually like to order Margherita Pizza; this is to test out the freshness of the ingredients. However, since Daniele’s have the Burrata pizza, we just directly order the burrata. The crust is just awesome, like the Pizza Parma. The toppings here is just a mixture of tomato sauce, creamy burrata cheese and the explosion of sweetness from the cherry tomatoes.

Pizza Burrata
Pizza Gustosa ($23) – Mozzarella Cheese, Gorgonzola Cheese, Spicy Salami (Pork) and Artichokes. This white pizza is cheesier compare to the pizza burrata and pizza parma due to the cheese base. The spicy pork salami is thinly sliced, once it’s cooked the salami turns out to be crisp and crunchy like bacon texture. The artichokes are soft and moist.

Pizza Gustosa
Pizza Burrata E Porchini ($25). A must order for mushroom lovers. The cheese base pizza enhances the flavour of the porcini mushrooms. Once you bit the mushroom portion, the flavour and the juice of the mushroom just burst in your mouth. Yumz!!

Pizza Burrata E Porchini
Pizza Burrata E Porchini - Slice
Fettucine Bolognese ($21). I find the fettucine was cooked over the point of al-dente. The Bolognese sauce was alright; however, it just did not wow me and was easily overshone by the pizza.

Fettucine Bolognese
Spaghetti Seafood ($24). At first, I was a bit worried about the flavour, as the dish looks a bit bland. However, I stand corrected. The spaghetti is cooked perfectly to the point of al-dente, infused with robust seafood essence. With each mouthful of pasta, the seafood flavour just gets stronger and stronger. Feels like I was eating the Italian version of Hokkien Mee. Amazing!

Spaghetti Seafood
The decor of the restaurant is simple, minimalist and modern. You won’t miss the striking red colour pizza oven, which is the centrepiece of the restaurant. To date, I only see Daniele handling the oven. Service friendly and efficient. You can place your order through the QR code on the table, or at the counter up front.

In summary, LD and I agree that Daniele’s Pizza served the best pizza in the east of Singapore. The pizza is light, fluffy and crispy, while the ingredients are fresh and of the highest quality. We’ll definitely return for more of our pizza fix here. Saluti!! Cheers!!

Eng’s East Village – The Best Claypot Rice

Traditional Claypot Rice

Eng’s Char SiewWantan Mee at East Village is the first outlet outside their main shop in Tanjong Katong area. It is also a special outlet, where you can enjoy wantan mee and traditional claypot rice at the same time.

A Story of Claypot Rice

While Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee does not require further introduction (Read my review here), the Traditional Claypot Rice that is intriguing. The head chef in charge for the Traditional Claypot Rice is Ah Ching, who was the former head chef of Geylang Claypot Rice for 20 years before he decided to open his own shop. After a few ventures, he subsequently manages to secure the franchise of Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee and served his signature claypot rice under Eng’s brand at East Village.

Claypot Rice ($7 for Small – 1 pax/ $13 for Medium – 2 pax / $23 for Large – 4 pax). As the rice is cooked from scratch upon order, you can expect 20 to 30 minutes wait, depending on the crowd. Ingredients include old grains, chicken, lap cheong, salted fish and vegetable.

Claypot Rice - Large

The service staff will bring the claypot to your table. He / She will ask you how much dark sauce you want? I suggest start with normal, so you can add it later if it is not enough. The service staff then mixed the rice and the ingredients for you. I am glad that the mixing is done by the service staff, this will ensure the claypot rice is mixed evenly and consistent all the time.

Claypot Rice - Being Mix

The fragrant aroma of the claypot rice is just irresistible. The al-dente rice is coated evenly with sweet dark soy sauce is crunchy. The chicken has a silky exterior, followed with juicy and succulent flesh. Lap cheong and salted fish provided the OMPH, or umami flavour that elevate this classic. Yum Yum!

Claypot Rice - Ready to Eat

For claypot rice connoisseur, you will know the burnt part at the bottom is the best. On top of the solid flavour above, you will get the signature crispy and smoky flavour. This is one of the best Claypot Rice in Singapore.

How is the wantan mee? We find the wantan mee is on par or slightly better compare to the original outlet in Tanjong Katong. The wantan mee ($4.50 for regular / $5.50 for large) has a nice bouncy egg noodle taste. They are very generous with the pork oil that delivers the OMPH factor in the noodle plus keeping the noodle loose and not sticking with each other.

Dry Wantan Mee - Regular

I like the char siew here because it is fatty, with a crisp exterior that complements the noodle nicely. For the dry version, the wantan is served in the soup. They may be small; however, it delivers a solid pork flavour. LD like the Signature Super Spicy chilli sauce here, as the spiciness and flavour are well balanced.

Dry Wantan Mee - Regular

The Wantan

Don’t forget to get or ask for their pork lard. Who can say no to this!!

The Chillis and Pork Lard

For other side dishes, we tried their Fried Wantan ($4 for 12 pcs, $5 for 16 pcs), Prawn Paste Chicken ($8 for small, $12 for 9 pcs), Stir-fried sweet potato leaves ($7 for small, $9 for large) and Soup of the day ($4).

Fried Wantan - 12 pcs

The fried wantan is crispy, crunchy and filled with the marinated minced pork. It is served with mayonnaise, but I usually without dipping into it as the wantan is tasty enough. The prawn paste chicken is aromatic, crispy externally and succulent internally. The prawn paste is a bit timid for me, I like mine more pungent.

 Stir-fried sweet potato leaves

I suggest you skip the Soup of the day. The last time we try it, it tastes watery. Better stick with their wantan soup.

Soup of The Day

The place is packed and easily filled during lunch and dinner time. The tables are line-up sticking to each other and there is no walking space in between the tables, therefore, you need to have a high tolerance and be friendly with your neighbours. Service is friendly, efficient and accommodating. At least the aircon is strong and you won’t sweat even the place is packed.

Overall, one of the best Traditional Claypot Rice in Singapore / the best Traditional Claypot Rice in East of Singapore. I can get Eng’s Char Siew Wantan Mee and Claypot Rice at the same place, I am a happy man. Cheers!!

[CLOSED] Ras Bites – A Classy Mass Market Indian Restaurant in Changi Business Park

Ras Bites is the mass market eatery concept by Palate Vine Group, which strive to offer up-market dining experiences that are truly unique in nature. Located in Changi Business Park, Ras Bites target market are employers of banks and MNCs who set up their outposts in the east of Singapore.

The Buffet Table

We were introduced by our friends A&M where they celebrated their son first communion here. On Saturday night it can be difficult to find this building as the surroundings are very quiet and dark. Not recommended if you do not have your own transport. Should you able to come this area, you will be rewarded with atmosphere closer to private dining, as there are almost no other customers and you will have their full attention in serving you.

[CLOSED] Gurame Indonesian Restaurant – Traditional Indonesian Cuisine

Fried Gurame

Gurame Indonesian Restaurant ('Gurame') is located in Changi Coast Park, or to be exact it is located in NSRCC Sea Sport Centre. The location is quite secluded and can be difficult to reach without your own set of wheels. Once you are there, you will be rewarded with the clear view of Changi Beach, if you don't mind the tankers or carriers cruising by or the noise of planes landing and taking off.

Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim – Fish Ball Noodle or Seafood Noodle

Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim

Little Devil & I get to know about this place a few years back, when out of the blue my FIL keep coming back to this location to eat Kway Teow Mee. On one fine day, he just keep insisting that we must go and try. As we are staying in Hougang, it took us about 20 mins to get here. It was a Saturday morning and finding a parking spot was really a hassle. Alas, it also took us another 30 mins of wait before we get our order. Hungry and annoyed, my first impression here was less memorable.

Itacho Sushi @ Changi Airport – Creative Sushi Restaurant

Itacho Sushi is a concept from Hong Kong-based F&B group specialising in Japanese cuisine called Company Taste of Japan Group. Currently this group has 7 dining concepts with more than 100 outlets in Hong Kong, China, Macau, Singapore, Japan and Australia. Currently there are 6 outlets of Itacho Sushi in Singapore and many more to come.

Itacho Sushi is a Japanese dining concept that mainly focus on sushi. You can find both traditional theme and also the modern creative sushi as well, such as roasted sushi and other modern influence creations as well. While sushi is the main theme, do not fret, you can still find other Japanese dishes in their restaurant.

After Little Devil and her BFF had a wonderful dining experience in Itacho Sushi @ Ion Ocrhard, they insisted their hubbies to give this place a try. So we end up in their Changi Airport T3 outlet and we let LD and her BFF in charge of the ordering.

Spicy Salmon & Beancurd Sushi ($1.20 ea). A unique combination of crunchy beancurd on top of the sushi rice with spicy salmon. Nice presentation, the beancurd is crispy however you might not be able to eat the sushi in one bite.

Spicy Salmon & Beancurd Sushi

Yellow Tail with Black Truffle Sauce ($2.40 ea) and Fatty Salmon sushi ($1.70 ea). The fresh fatty salmon kind of melts in your mouth, while the black truffle sauce gave the yellow sushi more earthy flavour to the sushi. Even the salmon sushi ($1.20 ea) is just fresh and succulent. Yummyy

Salmon Sushi
Yellow Tail with Sea Salt ($2.40 ea) and Yellow Tail with Citrus Junos Sauce ($2.40 ea). Unlike the black truffle sauce, we find it difficult to detect the sea salt in this sushi. While the citrus junos sauce is very subtle, a definite tasty 'marriage' with the yellow tail.

Yellow Tail with Sea Salt  and Yellow Tail with Citrus Junos Sauce

Supreme Sea Eel ($6.50 ea). What a gorgeous presentation. Generous slab of eel, on top of tiny sushi rice. Basically a must try for eel lover like myself, but it can be a challenge to consume.

Supreme Sea Eel

Roasted fatty salmon sushi ($1.70 ea), roasted duck breast sushi ($1.50 ea), roasted kagashima wagyu beef ($4.80 ea). This is actually the first time I ate roasted sushi. The roasting created a slightly crispy texture on the outer and reduce the possibility overwhelming fat overload from too much fatty salmon. Delicious. The wagyu beef basically melts in your mouth. While the roasted duck breast has a springy yet succulent texture to it.

&
 roasted duck breast sushi

Roasted Swordfish ($2.80 ea), roasted squid leg ($1.20 ea) & Salmon with Soy Sauce ($0.40 ea). Again, the roasting component create a different texture and taste to the normal swordfish that we know. Very distinct but yummy.

Roasted Swordfish, roasted squid leg & Salmon with Soy Sauce

Grilled Pork Sushi ($1.30). Yup, grilled pork sushi! My first time trying this, the pork is just tender and juicy. Not to the point that it melts in your mouth, but it is good enough (according to LD and her BFF that the ones that they tried in Ion actually melts in the food). The sweet sauce is very subtle and inviting.

Grilled Pork Sushi

Roasted Foie Gras ($7.20 ea). The Foie Gras is is crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. As the portion is small, the Foie Gras has become too dry and thus it does not have the melt-in-your-mouth effect. You can give it a miss. Roasted Egg ($2.40) is a combination of sweet tamago with a bitter charred. Not something you can find in every Japanese restaurant.

Roasted Foie Gras

Roasted Egg

Sea Urchin with Rice ($15 ea). A must try for sea urchin lover. It is just you, the sea urchin and rice. Little Devil loves this and always order it when she has a chance.

Sea Urchin with Rice

Anyway, if you still have some space if your tummy after the sushi above, you can try their Green tea soba with scallops ($6 ea), or Sweet potato ($3) and Home made milk pudding (caramel) ($3 ea). The soba is al dente, however the taste is just average. The sweet potato will be better if serve hot with crispy caramel coating. While the milk pudding is soft, but subtle in taste.

Sweet potato and Home made milk pudding (caramel)

The decoration for this place is quite simple and zen. Service is average. It took them a while before they take our order or even get their attention when we need something or when we need to place more order, even when the restaurant is no longer crowded.

Overall, Itacho Sushi is a good place to come for your sushi experience. Price varies, starting from as cheap $0.40 up per sushi. Of course expect to pay premium when you want premium cuts. The best part is you will be assured of the fresh ingredients. Final note from LD, she feels that the ION Orchard branch is better than this branch. Cheers!!
