Itaewon Jjajang – Yummy Korean Chinese Cuisine

During our last staycation in Sofitel city centre, I noticed the presence of Itaewon Jjajang at Peck Seah Street. It seems the restaurant is always packed with diners from opening to closing time. This time around, together with “makan kakis’ we decided to give it a try.

Itaewon Jjajang
While waiting to be seated, we decided to order Set A ($45), which consists of Tangsuyuk, Jjajangmyeon and Jjampong Noodle. If you don’t like Jjampong, you can replace it with 1 Korean stew (kimchi, sundubu or doenjang). Set A is supposed to be for 2 pax, however, it easily feeds 3 to 4 pax.

Tangsuyuk
Tangsuyuk, Korean Chinese version of sweet and sour pork. The crispy strips of fried pork looks pale, but it was super crispy. The sauce is sweet and tangy with a flowery aroma in the background. It is served separately, so the pork can remain crispy. The plating also included a sliced of dried orange, usually use for cocktails. Though the sauce is good, I find the pork is too crispy, you don’t get the juicy pork taste in each bite. More like crispy and crunchy only.

Tangsuyuk
Jjajangmyeon. We ask for extra noodles (+$3) and fried egg (+$2). It was a wise decision indeed. The noodle is solid and bouncy. The sauce is not overly sweet and you can taste the diced meat in the sauce. Though the fried egg does not make much of a difference in the overall taste, it gives you additional shiokness to the Jjajangmyeon. Yummy.

Jjamppong. LD decided to went off chart and order level 3 for its spiciness. The service staff gave us the look “Are You Sure??”, even repeating the warning when serving the Jjamppong. The noodle is bouncy, but the broth is super spicy fit for those doing the spicy Korean noodle challenge. The dish is loaded with seafood and you won’t feel short-changed. The comment from Running Man is “Super Spicy but Shiok!!”

Seafood Pancake ($25). I am glad that we ordered this. Big portion with crispy base and edges. The seafood, spring onion and cut chilli cover all the top parts of the pancake. In each bite of the pancake, you get the crunchy texture, with an eggy taste and seafood flavour. It is one of the best Korean seafood pancakes that we ever tried. Two Thumbs Up!! 👍 👍

The side dishes include kimchi, Szechuan vegetables, yellow pickled radish and homemade pickled cabbage & cucumber. The yellow pickled radish and homemade pickled cabbage & cucumber are so good, that we asked for a refill.

The décor of the restaurant reminds me of a casual dining restaurant in Korea. The main dining area is filled with solid wood tables and chairs. We were seated in one of the private rooms and it feels quaint and comfortable. We experience two different types of service. The one that handles the queue, is probably the owner or the chef. He is not that friendly and it feels like you are meeting the discipline master in your school days. Meanwhile, the rest of the service staff are super friendly and helpful.

Overall, the food at Itaewon Jjajang is delicious. We’ll definitely return for the jumbo Jjajangmyeon, seafood pancake and try their other dishes. Cheers!!

O.BBa Jjajang – Korean Chinese Food in SG

Jajangmyeon

O.BBa JJajang (“OBJ”) is a sister restaurant of O.BBa BBQ (Full review of O.BBa BBQ is available here), serving Korean Chinese cuisine.

O.BBa JJajang

Korean movie or drama lovers will easily recognise these popular Korean Chinese dishes. Most of the Korean Chinese cuisine can be traced the origin from the Northern side of China, like Beijing and Shandong. However, the Korean has made it their own by stamping their style in these dishes.

Jajangmyeon ($10 lunch / $12 dinner & +2 Upsize). A thick Chinese style noodle dish topped with sweet bean sauce. The ingredients in the sauce also include diced pork, onions and vegetables. Before you eat the noodle, make sure you mix the sauce evenly into the noodle.

Jajangmyeon

The noodle is thick and silky, while the dark bean sauce is sweet and whet your appetite. Since most of the ingredients coated in strong dark sauce, it is difficult to tell the difference between the diced pork and the diced vegetables. The uniqueness of the Jajangmyeon is that sweet bean sauce is so addictive, you can’t stop slurping it until the last strand of noodle. It is also normal in Korea that they finished off the sauce with white rice. Yummy.

Jajangmyeon - The Chinese Style Noodle

The side dishes served at OBJ include the yellow pickled radish, kimchi and Sichuan vegetables. I like the yellow pickle as it is not spicy and taste like the Japanese version, good to wash off the sweetness of the noodle and the “jelakness” from the next dish.

Side Dishes

Tangsuyuk ($25) Sweet and Sour Pork Korean style. Unlike the Chinese version, the pork here is not diced, instead, it is cut in strips about the length of your fingers. It is then coated in potato starch for the extra crispiness. The sweet and sauce normally serve separately and only poured on the pork after your approval.

Tangsuyuk

The version at OBJ is super crispy exterior, but pork strips remain juicy internally. The marinade of the pork is on the light side, and the sauce tasted sweet, with a little hit of tanginess.

Tangsuyuk

Gunmandu ($10 for 8pcs). Fried dumplings or deep-fried dumplings to be precise. It has a crispy exterior with moist and juicy pork and vegetable fillings. The skin of the dumpling is as thick as Chinese dumplings, it seals the juice inside the dumplings nicely.

Jjamppong ($12 lunch / $14 dinner). It is their version of Chinese Noodle Seafood Soup. This dish uses the same type of noodle as Jajangmyeon, while the soup is normally red due to the red pepper added, it boasts a generous portion of seafood. One of Tracy’s favourite dish.

The décor of the restaurant is simple, filled with square tables which usually sits 2 or 4 persons. We have there a few times, I find that a major renovation is due to spruce up the place. Service is friendly but OBJ usually understaffed.

Overall, OBJ still served one of the better Korean Chinese Food in Singapore. Their Jajangmyeon is delicious and they open till 3 AM is definitely a plus point. Gun Bae!! Cheers!!
