Goldleaf Restaurant – Mother’s Day Take Away Menu 2022 [MEDIA INVITE]

Celebrate this Mother’s Day with a sumptuous menu from Goldleaf Restaurant from the comfort of your home or anywhere you want. While there are no more restrictions, you might want to enjoy the celebrations without squeezing with other people at your favourite restaurant.

The team at Goldleaf Restaurant has designed this delicious and comforting menu to cater to your needs.

Goldleaf Mother's Day Take Away Menu
We started the meal with Cold Dish Trio. Consists of cold tofu, jellyfish with Chinese cabbage and sliced abalones with mala sauce. Each of them has its unique taste and texture, appetizers to start your meal.

Cold Dish Trio
Steamed Seabass in Superior Soy Sauce. A signature dish at Goldleaf and they have perfected the steaming time to the seconds. The seabass is smooth, silky and flaky, while the soy sauce accentuates the flavour of the fish nicely. If you wonder, will the quality of the fish still be good for home delivery? I can tell you that I received a home delivery from Goldleaf a few years back, and the fish is one of the dishes that finished first on that day.

Braised Duck Thigh. Tender and succulent duck meat, well-infused with the thick, robust and umami golden brown braising sauce. I like the fatty duck skin that just melts in your mouth. A nice dish to go with a bowl of white rice.

Braised Duck Thigh
Braised Mushrooms with Seasonal Vegetables. The robust braised mushrooms are poured on top of the crunchy Nai Bai. It’s like having a 2-contrasting flavour. A crunchy, clean and slightly bitter vegetables mixed with bouncy, intense and robust braised mushrooms. Simple combo yet packs with flavour.

Braised Mushrooms with Seasonal Vegetables (Nai Bai)
Golden Porridge. This is the second time we tried this dish. The porridge is cooked with seafood stock, together with big tiger prawns, mussels and scallops. Each scoop of the porridge is filled plump grain of rice infused with solid seafood flavour. Yummy!

Scallops
Kam Heong Flower Clams. A fresh and juicy flower clams cooked with fragrant and spicy Kam Heong sauce. I like the texture of the clams; however, I find the sauce is a bit too spicy for my liking. However, LD does not have any issue with the spiciness. In case you don’t take spicy dishes well, you can ask them to lower the spiciness level.

Golden Ocean – Korean Sashimi in the East

Golden Ocean Korean Restaurant is the first Korean restaurant in Singapore where we ever had a Korean signature sashimi set. Since we were at Katong Shopping Centre, we decided on a return visit.

Golden Ocean
We wanted to order the flat fish sashimi, however, they don’t have enough. So, this time around we ordered Assorted Sashimi ($150 for 2 pax) from the Signature Sashimi Set. The set includes assorted seafood, side dishes and spicy stew

Almost immediately, a seaweed soup is served. The flavour is very subtle and the soup is seasoned with the natural flavour of the seaweed.

Seaweed Soup
Following the soup, an assorted seafood plate consisting of mussels and clams was served. They are nice and juicy. It is cooked simply, to allow you to taste the natural sweetness of the mussels and clams. There is a touch of spiciness from the cut chilli to perk up the seafood.

Mussels and Clams
Assorted seafood sashimi, abalone, sea cucumber, sea squirt, octopus and prawns. Most of them tasted very bland and you enjoy them more for the texture. You need the soy sauce and doenjang banga (Korean sashimi dipping sauce) to enhance the flavour of the seafood. The abalone and the prawns are fresh and crunchy, while the sea squirt is chewy and the sea cucumber is soft and bouncy.

Prawns. Octopus, Sea Squirts, Sea Cucumber and Abalone
The side dishes serve include grilled corn with cream and cheese, grilled ginkgo and garlic and grilled saba fish. I like their corn with cream and cheese so much that I have to stop myself, so that I can enjoy the other dishes.

Grilled Corn, Cream & Cheese; Gingko and Garlic
Since I am not a fan of gingko and garlic, I leave that to LD. The saba is nicely grilled, crisp externally followed by juicy flaky flesh.

Saba Fish
Now to the star of the dinner. The assorted fish sashimi plate consists of salmon sashimi, rock fish and flat fish sashimi. The flat fish sashimi has a meaty and resilient texture. It is a bit chewy and it has a subtle sweetness that goes well with the lemon and soy sauce.

Flat Fish (Cream edge), Rock Fish (Black Edge) & Salmon
The rock fish has a smoother and softer texture compared to the flat fish plus the flavour is also sweeter. Both the flat fish and rock fish is served at room temperature, as it is likely just taken from the fish tank in the dining room earlier.

Flat Fish (Cream edge), Rock Fish (Black Edge) & Salmon
The salmon sashimi in a Korean restaurant is different from the Japanese restaurant. The cuts that reach our table are still frozen. If you eat it immediately, it is almost like eating a salmon popsicle. It is best if you let it thaw, you can enjoy the chilled version. However, I still prefer the salmon sashimi served in a Japanese restaurant. LD says to scrap the salmon next time, LOL!

Acorn jelly with seaweed served cold. The soup is tangy and spicy. Since acorn jelly is almost tasteless, the seaweed and the soup supplement the flavours.

Acorn Jelly with Seaweed
Cooked food, chicken and leek skewers, prawn tempura and fish tempura. The cooked food gives a nice break from the raw fish dishes. Though I enjoy the prawn and fish tempura, the chicken skewers are a bit tough to my liking. Somehow, the skewers were thrown in to add the numbers and does not fit the seafood theme.

Chicken & Leek Skewers, Prawn Tempura
Fish Tempura (bottom)
Fish stew is the final dish. The parts of the fish that can’t be used for sashimi are used here cooked with radish, bean sprouts, watercress and a dollop of red pepper powder. The soup is light, a bit peppery yet it helps to chase out the jelakness (‘overwhelming’) from all the food we consumed. We feel ramen will go well with the dish, so we ordered one to be cooked in the stew. We enjoy the combination of fresh fish, radish and bean sprouts. It gave a healthy ending to the meal.

Fish Stew
Fish Stew with Ramen
For the sweet ending, each one of us gets a popsicle. LD choose the lime flavour, while I choose the plum.

Plume & Lime Popsicles
The décor of the restaurant is very simple, reminds me of a family restaurant. There are a few fish tanks in the restaurant to keep live fish and other seafood. Service is friendly, but when it is crowded you need to be prepared to wait a while as they are always under staff.

Overall, we have returned to the Golden Ocean a few times since our initial visit in 2021. We feel the food is good and the overall experience are enjoyable. Cheers!

Goldleaf Reunion Feast Takeaway
Goldleaf Reunion Abalone Yu Sheng. The vegetables are crunchy, the abalones are of a good size, the candied vegetables are very subtle in their sweetness, while the fragrant plum sauce binds all the ingredients together nicely. Also, watch out for the bursting sweetness from the lychee bubbles.

Steamed Seabass in Hong Kong Style. It might be a common dish in a Cantonese restaurant, however, Goldleaf perfected the steaming time to the seconds.

Housemade Roast Chicken. The marinate is just spot on, while the flesh from the breast is juicy and succulent. Without saying, the flesh on the thigh, drumstick and wings are perfect. I was hoping that the skin to be crispier, however, this can also be resulting in the meat turning dry.

Mushrooms with Seasonal Vegetables. A beautifully plated dish and tasty as well. The mushrooms are well braised and plump, while the gravy adds a robust flavour to the crunchy vegetables.

Signature Golden Porridge. The grains of rice are cooked with Goldleaf signature seafood stock. The porridge itself is loaded with seafood such as prawns, scallops, mussels and abalones, resulting in naturally sweet, robust and comforting porridge. Yumz!!

Katong Jago Seafood – Nice Overall Zhi Char

Signature Seafood Fish Head Steamboat
It started when LD saw a video clip of this Seafood Fishhead Steamboat and share it on my FB page. This led to makan session with R & K. Katong Jago Seafood (‘KJS’) is located at a coffee shop at Jago Close (off East Coast Road), which also house delicious Char Kway Teow and Western Food stalls.

Signature Seafood Fish Head Steamboat ($58) is a must-order here. Served in a traditional charcoal steamboat pot, the milky broth looks irresistible. The broth is robust, peppery and infused with the essence of seafood and fish head.

Signature Seafood Fish Head Steamboat
The fillings inside the steamboat include tiger prawns, clams, garoupa fish head and vegetables. For the milky white colour in the broth, the chef uses fresh milk instead of the carnation milk for a more natural flavour. A generous dash of cooking wine also added to give it the extra OMPH in this dish. Not forgetting, this steamboat comes with free flow of the soup. Yum Yum.

We started our meal with Chilled Prawns (FOC for orders above $70). First time I ever get prawns FOC. They are sweet, fresh and crunchy. It is actually worth ordering on its own.

Chilled Prawns
Deep-Fried Baby Squid ($14 – S, $20 – M, $26 – L). Deep-fried baby squid, tossed with a combination of sweet and savoury sauce. The diced veggies of onion, pineapple and cucumber accompanied the crispy baby squid nicely. Nice with a glass of cold beer!

Deep-Fried Baby Squid - Small
White Pepper Frog ($18). Unlike the black sauce version that you normally see with the frog porridge, the frog dish here looks very clean. The frog meat is tender and succulent, while the jus from the frog together with the white pepper created appetizing sweet and peppery flavour.

White Pepper Frog
Mee Tai Bak. This slippery rice noodle delivers a unique taste on its own. Instead of the thick sweet black sauce commonly found in zhi char place, the KJS version added ketchup into the sauce. The sweet and tangy combination, together with crunchy bean sprout feels like a party in your mouth.

Mee Tai Bak
Imperial Pork Ribs ($10 – S, $15 – M, $20 – L). Fork tender pork ribs coated with sweet aromatic sauce. The combination of oyster sauce, plum sauce, vinegar is just uplifting and perfect savoury ending to the meal here. Those who like fried garlic will appreciate the bitter sweetness deep fried garlic accompanying the pork.

Imperial Pork Ribs
Service is fast, warm and friendly. They don’t try to upsell you on their seafood and recommend the portion appropriate to your group size. Plus, the service staff keep refilling the soup automatically.

CBK verdict a good place to come for the Seafood Fishhead Steamboat. Not forgetting, the rest of the dishes that we order are very nice too. We’ll definitely come back for more. Cheers!!
