Myung Ga II – Authentic Korean Family Recipe [MEDIA INVITE]

Myung Ga (명가) II is a name famous in Singapore’s Korean food scene, that has become synonymous with dishes rooted in authentic Korean family recipes. The restaurant is expanding its legacy and proudly announces the opening of its second outlet in Singapore’s Litte Korea, Tanjong Pagar.

Myung Ga II
We started the tasting with Original Kimbap Spam ($11). These colourful Kimbab fillings include spam, omelette, carrot, spinach, pickled radish and burdock root. We like the chewy of the rice and seaweed, followed by the different textures of the fillings. I feel they can be a bit more generous with sesame oil wash on the seaweed. A good start to the meal.

Original Kimbap Spam

Banchan
Donkatsu ($20). I have tried a few Korean donkatsu in Singapore and I must say the version at Myung Ga II is the best one I tried in Singapore. The pork cutlet is fried to the point of very crispy, and the sauce has a nice balance of sweet and sour. The best part is the pork cutlet remains crispy even when it is covered with the sauce for a while. Served together on the donkatsu are corn kernels, baked beans, salad and pickled radish.

Donkatsu
Cheese Gyelanjjim ($15). The slightly charred cheese on top of gyelanjjim is just so inviting. The egg is fluffy and tasty, while the cheese adds the stretch factor and umami flavour to the egg.

Cheese Gyelanjjim
Seafood Pancake - Haemu Buchu Jeon ($20). Crispy externally, moist and pillowy internally. They are very generous with the ingredients, as I get a bite of the seafood in each part. The pancake itself is very tasty, I did not use the dipping sauce.

Seafood Pancake
Altang ($23) Korean Spicy Fish Roe Stew. Once we saw the fish roe and fish milt on the menu, we decided we must order this soup. The fish roe has a firm eggy texture, while the milt is soft and easily melts in your mouth. The soup is hot and spicy, suitable for LD but too spicy for me. The good thing is the portion of fish roe and fish milt are very generous as well.

Altang - Korean Spicy Fish Roe Stew
Spicy Stir Fried Octopus - Nakji Dupbap ($20). One of LD’s favourite Korean dishes, the octopus is tender, slightly chewy and spicy but shiok. Definitely a rice thief.

Spicy Stir Fried Octopus - Nakji Dupbap
Finally, we have Sliced Iberico Pork Belly ($22 for self grill / $24 for served grill). A speciality dish for Myung Ga at Tanjong Pagar. It is a time-honoured tradition of frozen pork BBQ. With the latest technology, frozen pork now delivers a better flavour compared to the vintage year.

Sliced Iberico Pork Belly
The frozen thin slices of pork belly are grilled and seasoned with salt and pepper. The result is crispy pork belly. You can eat the pork belly with seasoned gochujang, salt & sesame dip, green chilli and lettuce. I recommend that you ask the staff to do the grilling for you. Also for the first order, there is a minimum of 2 pax.

Perfectly Grilled Sliced Iberico Pork Belly
The sidekick for grilled pork belly
The décor of the restaurant is like a casual café setting. You won’t see any suction pipes coming down from the roof as it is not a Korean BBQ restaurant. The restaurant is bright and the ambiance is spruced up with K-pop music.

The Dining Area
Overall, Myung Ga II served solid Korean homecooked food. The dishes are well executed and they are very enticing as well. We’ll come back to try the rest of the dishes plus the Altang and Nakji Dupbap.

Our Desserts
Thank you very much Protegie and Victoria + Myung Ga II Team for the invitation.

WKD Cuts – Steak Tasting Pop Up

Dry Aged Tasting Platter

Last week, the foodie algorithm in my IG (@Chubbybotakkoala) displayed a sponsored post by WKD Cuts on their Steak Tasting Pop Up. I send the screenshot to LD and she said Let’s Go!!

WKD Cuts is a purveyor of the best quality meats and serving them up to perfection. Their business model is to deliver perfectly cooked meat (beef, lamb, pork plus sides) to your doorstep. Taking their business to the next level, WKD Cuts is having a Pop Up at Duxton for 2 weeks. Due to strong response, the team has extended the pop up till 02 October 2021.

WKD Cuts Steak Tasting Pop Up Menu
As a foodie, we love trying new things and steak tasting give us the freedom to try different cuts at one seating. A quick check through their booking website, we manage to get seating, though it is at the lounge area instead of the dinner area. While the menu is the same, you are seated on a comfortable leather sofa and eat your food from a knee-height table for the lounge area. Not ideal, but it seems to be the trend nowadays.

We wanted to order Smoked Burratina ($24) to start our meal, however, it runs out. Therefore, we decided to skip the starters and load up on the main. We decided on Dry Aged Tasting Platter ($148). Consist of:
100g USDA Angus 45 Days Dry-Aged Grain-Fed Striploin,
100g John Stone Irish Dry Aged Grass-Fed Beef Ribeye,
500g Galician Australian 45 Days Dry-Aged Bone-in Ribeye.
However, the grass-fed ribeye is unavailable, so the team replace it with upsized Bone-in Ribeye.

Dry Aged Tasting Platter
Left: Striploin, Right:Bone-in Ribeye, Top Right: Foie Gras and Bone Marrow
We enhance our platter further with Foie Gras ($12), Bone Marrow ($18) and Bearnaise Sauce ($6). WKD served a warm bread basket for us to nibble. We did not know that the waiting time is more than 40 minutes, so we decline the offer of extra bread. Big mistake on our side, because we had only brunch as we expected to overload ourselves with meat. Do take note to order a starter or accept the extra bread.

Bread Basket
Our dry-aged tasting platter is surely a heart-stopper. All the proteins are nicely grilled, with a charred exterior and medium-rare doneness internally. The 100g USDA Angus 45 Days Dry-Aged Grain-Fed Striploin just hits the spot for us. It has the right marbling, intense MOO MOO flavour and a slight bite in each of the cuts.

USDA Angus 45 Days Dry-Aged Grain-Fed Striploin
Our 800g Galician Australian 45 Days Dry-Aged Bone-in Ribeye (a.k.a Côte de boeuf) deliver a meaty steak, filled with rich MOO MOO flavour. Don’t expect a melt in your mouth sensation, this cuts one is for those who prefer the longer chewing process of their steak.

800g Galician Australian
45 Days Dry-Aged Bone-in Ribeye.

The platter is served with three different types of salt, lemon and also grilled garlic. However, we find the steaks are nicely seasoned and you don’t even need the extra sauce.

The additional foie gras that we ordered is thick and well-executed. Slightly crisp externally, followed with buttery and velvety texture internally. The bone marrow is slightly disappointing as it has a shallow depth and we can only extract around 2/3 of the marrow instead of the whole bone length.

Foie Gras
Duroc 21 Days Dry Aged Pork Chop ($30). #Porkgasm. Our first experience with exotic pork chop dated back to 2014. Once you tried Duroc, Mangalica or Nagano pork, you won’t ever look at pork chop the same again. We find Korabuta and Iberico are too common. The Dry-aged Duroc is nicely seared and cooked to medium doneness. If you can’t take your pork chop pink in the middle, you should give it a miss. The meat is juicy, succulent and it has a high-fat content. The grilled onion on the side helps to balance the “jelakness” in this meat. Yumz!!

Duroc 21 Days Dry Aged Pork Chop

Duroc 21 Days Dry Aged Pork Chop
For the sides, we have Roasted Ratte Potatoes ($15) and Creamed Spinach ($12). The potatoes are fragrant, crispy externally and soft internally. Cooked in duck fat and rosemary, it adds crispiness and a nice aroma to the potatoes.

Roasted Ratte Potatoes

Meanwhile, the creamed spinach portion is very generous. We enjoy the freshness of the spinach, perfectly cooked in the cream. We highly recommended these two sides to accompany your steak.

Creamed Spinach
Overall, we find the food are delicious and this pop up allows foodies to try out different types of meat from different suppliers worldwide. The Duroc pork chop is an absolute must try. We just hope that in the future, the team can consider adding steak knives in the cutlery arsenal and warm up the plates before serving. The warm plates prolong the fats from coagulating early and allow diners to enjoy the steak longer. Hopefully, we can come back for another round. Cheers!!

Famous Treasure – Island Wide Delivery [MEDIA DROP]

Wok-Fried Sri Lanka Crab with Black Pepper
Famous Treasure is a modern Chinese restaurant serving Nanyang Cuisine. Located in Capitol Piazza, Famous Treasure are known to serve nostalgic and bold flavours familiar to Singapore palate. The restaurant has been honoured by The World of Fine Wine for having 2-star wine list in 2019, for having an extensive range of rare and boutique wines and whiskeys to complement the dining experience here.

We have dined in Famous Treasure several times, you can check out the full review here. This is the first time that we tried Famous Treasure (‘FT’) Island-Wide delivery.

Our Meal

We ordered Roasted Irish "Silver Hill" Duck ($40 for half / $78 for whole). We love the roast duck here as it gives your juicy, succulent and melts in your mouth feeling. The whole duck is chopped and divided into 2 containers. The presentation of the duck is the same as it is served in the restaurant.

Roasted Irish "Silver Hill" Duck

Due to its high-fat content, Roasted Irish Duck is it is best eaten hot / warm. Once it becomes cold, the fats become coagulated taste very oily. When you consume this at home, it is best to slightly reheat it in a microwave or oven to render the fats.

Roasted Irish "Silver Hill" Duck - Half

Deep-Fried Pork Belly with Fermented Beancurd ($20 / $30 / $40). Another favourite dish that we like to order in FT. The pork belly is marinated with fermented beancurd and deep-fried. The pungent aroma of the fermented beancurd will entice your palate before you bit into the pork belly. The exterior is crispy, while the interior is fat, juicy and succulent. It is served with green colour sauce, made from chilli padi, green chilli and other secret ingredients. The garlic gave a touch of sweetness in this dish.

Deep-Fried Pork Belly with Fermented Beancurd

Deep-Fried Pork Belly with Fermented Beancurd

Braised Hakka Beancurd ($16 / $24 / $32). FT version of famous HK Yong Tofu. The beancurd is stuffed with minced pork and deep-fried. It is then braised in brown sauce together with ladyfingers. The beancurd is firm and hold the tasty minced pork well. The brown sauce is a combination of savoury and sweet, goes well with white rice. An enjoyable dish.

Braised Hakka Beancurd

KL Style Hokkien Mee ($20 onwards). A good rendition of KL Style Hokkien Mee. The thick noodle is bouncy with a nice bite to it. The flavours of the fried prawns, pork oil, pork lard and premium dark soy sauce generate the mixture of sweet, savoury and OMPH flavour in this dish.

KL Style Hokkien Mee

Wok-Fried Sri Lanka Crab with Black Pepper ($108 onwards). First time trying the black pepper crab here and we were pretty impressed. The Sri Lanka Crab that we received is solid, fresh and has a sweet flesh. The black pepper has the perfect kick that will tantalise your taste bud. Yum Yum.

Wok-Fried Sri Lanka Crab with Black Pepper

Overall, it was indeed a satisfying meal from Famous Treasure.

[CLOSED] Cafe De Hong Kong – Original Hong Kong Flavours in Singapore

Cafe De Hong Kong

Cafe De Hong Kong ('CDHK') is a hidden restaurant along Balestier Road in Singapore that served Hong Kong style Ci Zhar. The cuisine here represent the items that you can find in any typical restaurants in Hong Kong. In case you are thinking of Xin Wang or other HongKong cafe, they served different types of food.

LD and I have patronised CDHK regularly and it has become our must go-to restaurant if we are looking for comfort food. It is those dishes that we had in Melbourne during our uni days.

Deep Fried Luncheon Meat Chip

Soup is basically a must have for Cantonese and Hong Kong cuisine. In CDHK you should not miss out on their double-boiled soup of the day. Our last visit here, we had their Winter Melon Soup ($35). A good portion good for 6 to 8 pax. The soup is double boiled inside the winter melon. The broth is sweet and robust, good to warm up your stomach. They also have a smaller portion, just check with the service staff.

Winter Melon Soup

Winter Melon Soup

Roasted Chicken ($34) is one of the signature dishes here. It is tender, succulent and the best part is the skin. It is paper thin and crisp. Absolutely delicious. To save on cooking time, you might want to order this during reservation.

Roast Chicken

If you prefer something more traditional, order the Claypot Chicken with Salted Fish and Tofu ($18 for Large). This dish is not on the menu however you can place the order with the boss, Francis. The combination of salted fish and au jus of the chicken will whet your appetite, while the tofu just absorbs the flavour nicely. A good dish to go with rice.

My Sentosa Dining Experience

Recent Sentosa's Siloso GrillFest created a ripple in Singapore F&B scene with its Longest Brick Barbecue Pit. While we know that Sentosa is definitely a holiday island destinations for Singaporean and foreign visitors, Sentosa is also a foodie paradise. It has now more than 120 F&B outlets, definitely has something to satisfy your discerning palate.

From those splendid selections, these few outlets are highly recommended by Chubbybotakkoala.com

#1. Wokº15.

Chilli Crab

Located at ONEº15, this Seafood & Cantonese restaurant is opened to the public. It served one of the best Chilli Crab that LD & I have ever tried in Singapore. The touch of sweet, tangy and spicy egg gravy was so addictive, each person needs about 2 to 3 fried mantou to polish the chilli crab gravy.

Golden Fried Man Tau

The rest of the dishes truly represent the Cantonese influence in the dish. The double boiled soup is a must order to start your meal. It is clean and nutritious broth will warm up your stomach in anticipation for the main dishes to come. Dim Sum is available on the weekend.

Double Boiled Japanese Chicken Soup with Himematsutake Mushrooms

To accompany the sumptuous meal here is the stunning view of luxurious yachts docked at the marina. It is a what I called Millions Dollar View.

#2. OSIA Seafood and Grill

OSIA Seafood and Grill earned its first Michelin Star in 2016. It is likely to retain this recognition with the strong collaboration between Celebrity Chef Scott Webster and Chef de Cuisine Douglas Tay.

Stone Hearth Flatbread

The highlights of the food here are their Stone Hearth Flat Bread, Stone Hearth Oven Grill Byron Bay Berkshire Pork and of course the to die for soufflé. On the first bite, the flat bread has a distinct crispiness in the crust, follow with moist, fluffy and resilient texture in the middle.

Byron Bay Berkshire Pork Rack 300 gram

The Berkshire Pork is in the class of its own. The cut is generously thick, cooked just right with slight pinkish in the middle but absent of blood. It is well seasoned, tasty, tender and succulent. It is so tasty that I almost did not touch the fresh hollandaise sauce. There is nothing much to say about the soufflé, except for you will regret it if you don't order.

OSIA Macadamia Soufflé
The portion served at OSIA is generous and suitable for family and communal dining. With the open kitchen concept, you can also have a peek at Chef Douglas Ng and his team at work.

#3. Greenwood Fish Market

One of the best places to enjoy your seafood. It has almost everything you need about seafood. Retail market, bar and dining location all in one location.

The selection here is extensive starting from fresh fish for cooking and sashimi, oysters, shellfish & crustaceans. On top of that, Greenwood Fish Market also have burger, pasta, and meat on their menu. To make the food more interesting, the restaurant also do in house cold smoke.

Chef's Creation of Fried Fish, Cold Smoke Fish and Salad

My most memorable dining experience here is during the oyster festivals. The range of oysters they brought in from different part of the world was so extensive and fresh, I ate about 15 type of oysters in one seating. A definite Oystergasm!!

Oyster Selection

There is no better place to enjoy your seafood with the beautiful view of the sea. Known for its fresh seafood, including their extensive seasonal range of oysters and in-house cold smoke. Greenwood Fish Market is definitely a must visit.
