Dignity Kitchen – Good Food for Good Cause

Fish'N'Chips
During this stabilisation period, I saw frequent posts in FB Group calling for support of this makan place. Dignity Kitchen by Project Dignity is a food court run by people with disabilities (physical and intellectual) and disadvantaged (social and mental).

Dignity Kitchen
Project Dignity has a mission to restore dignity to different-abled and disadvantaged through vocation with passion. Project Dignity provides sponsored training for unemployed adults with special needs and places them with our employment partners within the F&B, hospitality and retail sectors. Some of the graduates will be hired in their food court (Dignity Kitchen) and book retail stores (Dignity Mama). For more information on Project Dignity, you can check them out here.

Stalls 1
Dignity Kitchen is a food court concept, with the following stalls Nasi Lemak, Chicken Rice, Claypot Rice, Rojak, Noodle, Western, Bakery, Fruits and Nanyang Kopi. When you enter the food court, you just place all your orders at the cashier and wait for your number to be called on the screen. Afterwards, proceed to the designated stall for collection. All the stalls and cashier are manned by the differently-abled and disadvantaged crew.

Stalls 2
On my first visit to Dignity Kitchen with my regular makan kaki “K”. We ordered Signature Rojak ($4) to share. The portion is very generous, consisting of fruits, vegetables, youtiao, coated evenly with the rojak sauce and sprinkle with ground peanuts. The ingredients are fresh, the sauce is thick, however, it can be better if fermented prawn paste is stronger to give the sauce more OMPH.

Signature Rojak
Fish’N’Chips ($6.50). A huge place of fish and chips. The batter is crispy and the fish is flaky. I found out later that they use a higher-grade dory fish for the fish and chips. The crinkle fries are crisp externally and moist internally. There is fresh salad, lemon wedge on the side and mayonnaise as a dipping sauce instead of tartar sauce. The fish and chips here have the same standard as those in bistros or gastropubs.

Flaky Dory Fish
K decided to have Chicken Chop ($6.50). Since he is watching his carbo intake, he only has protein and vegs. I tried a bite of the chicken chop, it is juicy, succulent, with a touch of crispiness externally.

Chicken Chop
We also tried their Muffins ($2.50 each). There are moist, light and packs with flavour, especially the Oreo Chocolate Flavour Muffin.

Muffins
On the second visit, I had Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang ($4). Looking at the portion, you are likely to pay more outside. The rice is rich and fragrant, while the beef rendang is tasty and succulent. The achar is a bit spicy, yet refreshing.

Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang
LD ordered Prawn Laksa ($5). According to her, the broth is rich, lemak and packs a good spicy kick. The portion is generous and the prawns are fresh. A very good serving indeed.

Prawn Laksa
The environment at Dignity Kitchen is clean, tidy with simple furnishing and air-conditioned. While dining at Dignity Kitchen, you can also see the two training classes use to Train-and-Place programme for adults with special needs seeking employment; and for WSQ and SkillsFuture eligible hawker culinary courses for the public.

Menu 1
CBK Verdict: Although Dignity Kitchen main mission is a social enterprise, the food serves here are of a good standard. They are also tasty and generous with their portion. What better way to support a social cause with a happy tummy. Cheers!

Menu 2
Here are some ways you can contribute to the operation cost of the Dignity Project:
- Dine or Take Away on food from Dignity Kitchen
- Take a course at Dignity Learn. An inclusive training centre that provides WSQ and SkillsFuture eligible hawker culinary courses for the public. LD and I attended a Food Hygiene course, coinciding with our second visit to Dignity Kitchen.
- Purchase items from Dignity Mama stores, located in local hospitals.
- Dignity Outreach combines team bonding with impact, offering corporate and government entities an avenue to engage in corporate citizenship while achieving team building objectives.

Oscar’s – Exquisite Lobster Nasi Lemak [MEDIA INVITE]

Lobster Nasi Lemak at Oscar's

Oscar’s at Conrad Centennial Singapore is officially re-open for dine-in. For the month of July, Oscar’s will be serving Lobster Nasi Lemak. The menu will include a welcome drink, starter, Lobster Nasi Lemak, unlimited sides and dessert. For a limited time, the Exquisite Lobster Nasi Lemak is priced at S$40++.

The dining experience starts with a complimentary welcome beverage. You can choose from Air Limau (lime juice) or Gula Melaka Iced Tea. LD choose the lime juice while I choose the Iced Tea. The gula Melaka infused its unique earthy and mild sweetness to the milk tea, while the lime juice is with a hint of sourness and it is not too sweet, quite refreshing!

Air Limau (lime juice) & Gula Melaka Iced Tea

For the starter, we have Kueh Pie Tee. It is served with braised turnips, steamed baby shrimps, fried shallots, sesame seeds and home-made signature sauce. The cup is crispy, while the braised turnips are on the crunchy side, topped with springy baby shrimp. The home-made signature sauce has a spicy and tangy taste to it.

Set Main Course, Lobster Nasi Lemak with fried chicken wings, ikan bilis, peanuts, egg, achar and onion chilli sambal. The lobster is juicy and succulent, topped with sweet onion chilli sambal. I would say the spiciness level of the chilli sambal is about 5 of 10, with a hint of sweetness, so it was acceptable to me.

Lobster Nasi Lemak

The fried chicken wing is well marinated with rempah, served piping hot, making it just irresistible. Meanwhile, the coconut rice was lacking the richness of coconut milk, hopefully, after our feedback, the team will be pouring the coconut milk more liberally. Aside from the lobster, you also have achar, ikan bilis, peanuts and hard-boiled egg on the plate, creating a comfort dish that we all familiar with.

Lobster Nasi Lemak

The Lobster Nasi Lemak comes with unlimited sides including beef rendang, muar otah otah, sotong chili sambal, bergedil, green beans with dried shrimp and white garlic sauce, signature home-made prawn chilli and kerabu timun.

Unlimited Side Dishes

The Muar otah otah is served with steam egg, reminds me of Spanish baked eggs. The otah slices are moist with the rice balance of fish paste and sambal. The steam egg added a smooth and silky eggy coating to it that gives the wow feeling. If you manage to get the one with the yolk still runny, it will be the best. LD and I are going to try to do this at home for breakfast. Yum Yum.

Muar Otah Otah with Steam Egg

Next best dish is the bergedil. The potato is hand mashed, resulting in combo texture of mashed potatoes and chunk of potatoes as well. Since the bergedil is served hot, you can smell the fragrant aroma of the fried egg, we ended with 2 servings of this.

Bergedil
Beef Rendang

Beef Rendang

The beef rendang is pack with spices, though I find the meat is on the lean side. The sotong chilli sambal has a very good springy, yet easy to bite. Meanwhile, the green beans are crunchy and loaded with lots and lots of dried shrimp, a rice thief dish.

LD had the signature home-made prawn chili, at first, she feels it was not spicy enough. (Spiciness rating about 6 of 10). Chef Mandar power up the chilli, bringing the spiciness level to 8 of 10. Though she likes it with more heat, she finds the new mix of prawn chilli to be solid and it will be a “rice thief” dish. The acidity in the kerabu timun provided a good balance and palate cleanser from all the rich dishes.

Signature Home-Made Prawn Chilli
Desserts are durian puff, pandan milo tiramisu and ice creams. The durian puff has a light and fluffy pastry, while the fillings is pack with cream durian fillings. The milo tiramisu is solid and creamy. Though it can do with an extra sprinkle of milo. The raspberry ice cream is tangy and delightful.

Overall, this Lobster Nasi Lemak dining experience just hits the spot for me. While the lobster is the star of the show; however, the supporting side dishes are incredible as well. Definitely worth a visit. Cheers!!

Ever wonder on how Singapore looks like in the past? Or do you want to re-live the past of Singapore atmosphere in the 70s? Or are you are looking for a quick escape from the hectic Singapore? The Coastal Settlement is the place to be. Located in an 'ulu' (not easy to reach) location, off Loyang Ave opposite entrance of Changi Air Base, this place is not easy to reach if you are not driving. No.1 Adam's Nasi Lemak – Supposedly One of The Best Nasi Lemak In Singapore

Adam Spread Nasi Lemak

Have you been to Adam Road Food Centre around lunch time? If you have, then you definitely seen this stall or even tried it before. The queue from this shop and the rival next door are just tremendous, basically nobody wants to seat at the tables near their stalls.

Chubby Botak Koala & The Little Devil survived 60 minutes wait here to get the taste of the ever popular nasi lemak here. We have heard of these notorious nasi lemak place, but this is our first ever visit and it was unplanned as well.

While I was waiting for my turn, I was listening to other customers on the phone checking with their office or family if they want any takeaway for their lunch. Apparently the sight of customers ordering between 10 to 15 packets each are normal here. When it is almost my turn, I heard that they are actually preparing order for 100 packs. No wonder the line is moving at turtle speed.

I ordered the Adam Spread ($5) consist of mutton rendang, chicken wing, fried egg, bergedel, ikan bilis & nuts, acar and of course the coconut rice. LD ordered Sutra Special ($4.50) consist of otah, fish cake, chicken wing, ikan bilis & nuts. While LD requested for extra chilli, I asked for extra rice and the lady just build rice mountain on my place and with no extra charges.

Adam Spread Nasi Lemak

So after 1 hour in line, how is the Nasi Lemak? The rice is very fragrant and unique. They use basmanti rice, which is more healthy than normal long grain rice resulted in more al dante version of rice. Ikan bilis and nuts is crispy and crunchy. The chicken wings are pipping hot, crispy and juicy. However the marination is only skin deep, while the meat is tender but tasted bland.

For my mutton rendang, the gravy is thick and sweet. The mutton is tender, but more on the dry side due to the lean meat used. Begedil is very tasty. LD's otah is huge in size, creamy and very flavourful. The fish cake is springy (qq) and in her opinion, the sambal (chilli) is the top notch and star attraction here. It is sweet, not to spicy, with multiple layer of flavour and very appetizing. No wonder people willing to line up, like bees going for their honey.

Sutra Nasi Lemak

The service here is very friendly but your patience will be tested while waiting. Normally there will be two lady serving, however today she is flying solo. Also, the popular stall next door was on holiday, so their customers went there to overcome their cravings for nasi lemak. The positive side of the slow service, is that the kitchen can keep up with demand and churn out pipping hot food.

As we ordered the two most expensive set, the rest on the menu are chicken set and fish set ($3.50 each). Consist of chicken wings / fried fish, fried egg, coconut rice, sambal, ikan bilis & nuts. There are some other dish you can add to your set, unfortunately you can't order extra chicken wings.

Overall, we can now say we tried No.1 Adam's Nasi Lemak. The pricing here is very reasonable. However, if you ask me to wait for another 1 hour for a grub of Nasi Lemak here, I will say NO! But if I am around the area before or after the peak hours, I might try my luck and eat here again. Cheers!
