Goldleaf Restaurant – Mother’s Day Take Away Menu 2022 [MEDIA INVITE]

Celebrate this Mother’s Day with a sumptuous menu from Goldleaf Restaurant from the comfort of your home or anywhere you want. While there are no more restrictions, you might want to enjoy the celebrations without squeezing with other people at your favourite restaurant.

The team at Goldleaf Restaurant has designed this delicious and comforting menu to cater to your needs.

Goldleaf Mother's Day Take Away Menu
We started the meal with Cold Dish Trio. Consists of cold tofu, jellyfish with Chinese cabbage and sliced abalones with mala sauce. Each of them has its unique taste and texture, appetizers to start your meal.

Cold Dish Trio
Steamed Seabass in Superior Soy Sauce. A signature dish at Goldleaf and they have perfected the steaming time to the seconds. The seabass is smooth, silky and flaky, while the soy sauce accentuates the flavour of the fish nicely. If you wonder, will the quality of the fish still be good for home delivery? I can tell you that I received a home delivery from Goldleaf a few years back, and the fish is one of the dishes that finished first on that day.

Braised Duck Thigh. Tender and succulent duck meat, well-infused with the thick, robust and umami golden brown braising sauce. I like the fatty duck skin that just melts in your mouth. A nice dish to go with a bowl of white rice.

Braised Duck Thigh
Braised Mushrooms with Seasonal Vegetables. The robust braised mushrooms are poured on top of the crunchy Nai Bai. It’s like having a 2-contrasting flavour. A crunchy, clean and slightly bitter vegetables mixed with bouncy, intense and robust braised mushrooms. Simple combo yet packs with flavour.

Braised Mushrooms with Seasonal Vegetables (Nai Bai)
Golden Porridge. This is the second time we tried this dish. The porridge is cooked with seafood stock, together with big tiger prawns, mussels and scallops. Each scoop of the porridge is filled plump grain of rice infused with solid seafood flavour. Yummy!

Scallops
Kam Heong Flower Clams. A fresh and juicy flower clams cooked with fragrant and spicy Kam Heong sauce. I like the texture of the clams; however, I find the sauce is a bit too spicy for my liking. However, LD does not have any issue with the spiciness. In case you don’t take spicy dishes well, you can ask them to lower the spiciness level.

Goldleaf Reunion Feast Takeaway
Goldleaf Reunion Abalone Yu Sheng. The vegetables are crunchy, the abalones are of a good size, the candied vegetables are very subtle in their sweetness, while the fragrant plum sauce binds all the ingredients together nicely. Also, watch out for the bursting sweetness from the lychee bubbles.

Steamed Seabass in Hong Kong Style. It might be a common dish in a Cantonese restaurant, however, Goldleaf perfected the steaming time to the seconds.

Housemade Roast Chicken. The marinate is just spot on, while the flesh from the breast is juicy and succulent. Without saying, the flesh on the thigh, drumstick and wings are perfect. I was hoping that the skin to be crispier, however, this can also be resulting in the meat turning dry.

Homemade Roast Chicken

Mushrooms with Seasonal Vegetables. A beautifully plated dish and tasty as well. The mushrooms are well braised and plump, while the gravy adds a robust flavour to the crunchy vegetables.

Signature Golden Porridge. The grains of rice are cooked with Goldleaf signature seafood stock. The porridge itself is loaded with seafood such as prawns, scallops, mussels and abalones, resulting in naturally sweet, robust and comforting porridge. Yumz!!

Goldleaf Restaurant – Chinese New Year 2020 [MEDIA INVITE]

Goldleaf Reunion Abalone Yu Sheng.

Goldleaf Restaurant (‘Goldleaf’) is founded in 1971 by a group of Singaporean businessmen who wanted to preserve the taste of old-school, family-style Chinese cuisine. Over the last 49 years, Goldleaf Restaurant has been faithful in preserving this tradition by serving Goldleaf’s customers “Comfort Food” including its staple Taiwanese-style porridge.

This Chinese New Year, Goldleaf offers 4 set menus: Abundance ($388+ for 4 pax), Happiness ($488+ for 6 pax), Prosperity ($688+ for 8 pax) and Auspicious ($888+ for 10 pax). At this tasting, we tried a few dishes from each set menu.

Chinese New Year Set Menu

Goldleaf Reunion Abalone Yu Sheng. The first impression that comes to mind is crunchy and refreshing. Instead of using salmon sashimi, Goldleaf uses abalone that adds natural sweetness and crunchiness. The plum sauce is made in house focusing on lower sugar level. Keep your taste buds ready for crunchy jellyfish and surprise lychee bubble that pops in your mouth.

Fish Maw and Crabmeat in Superior Broth. Thick and robust soup. The natural sweetness from the crabmeat really stands out, bodes well with the tasty broth. Usually, you need to add vinegar to remove any fishiness in the soup, I like mine without the vinegar.

Braised Broccoli with Scallops. A nice combination of crunchy texture from the broccoli with the sweet bouncy scallops. Add to the mix black fungus, mushrooms, mini corns, carrots and wolfberry for a medley of flavours and texture.

Braised Broccoli with Scallops

Sautéed Prawns with XO Sauce. The version of the XO sauce used here is leaning towards the flavour of Taiwan. It is aromatic but without the spicy punch of dried scallops and chilli normally found in Hong Kong style of XO sauce. The prawns are deep-fried, giving the shell a solid crispy texture, followed with firm yet bouncy flesh of the prawns. The XO is on the mild side and thus allowing the flavour of the prawn to shine.

Deep-fried Seabass in Sweet & Sour Sauce. A superbly fried seabass. It is lightly coated with flour and deep-fried till all the parts are crispy. The sweet and sour sauce is on the lighter side and complements the fish nicely.

Steamed Red Snapper in Hong Kong Style
. It is nicely done. The fish texture is firm and flaky. The special soy sauce accentuates the flavour of the fish, together with spring onions and chilli.

Golden Cereal Prawn Balls. Instead of prawn balls, our dishes use whole deep-fried prawns. The golden cereal is aromatic, crispy and sweet, allowing you to bite into the prawns without deshelling it. Some people will like it; however, I find the sweetness level in the cereal mix a bit off-putting for me.

Stewed Taiwanese Noodles with Crab Meat. A delicious noodle dish. The noodle is al-dente, a bit oily but the packs with strong Umami flavour from the crab meat and dark soy sauce. I like the bak choy and the popping texture of the tobiko as the final topping in this dish. Although you are full, don’t miss out on this dish. Yummy.

Stewed Taiwanese Noodles with Crab Meat

Yam Paste with Gingko Nuts and Goji Berries. Very smooth and silky yam paste. The sweetness level is around medium, just nice for me. Though it is good, I prefer my yam paste where I can feel the fibres.

We also tried Goldleaf signature dish Stewed Pork Belly with Mustard Greens. I can’t say NO to pork belly, especially when it is cooked in the form of my childhood favourite dish. The pork belly is well marinated and steams till it melts in your mouth. The secret is the mustard green below where it absorbs the essence of the pork. Put this on a top of steam rice, you will be asking for more rice in no time. My ultimate “Rice Thief” dish.

Overall, Goldleaf presents a homely version of Chinese New Year dishes executed. It sticks to its expertise in serving “Comfort Food” and we really enjoy the meal here. Cheers!!

Quality Cafe – Presenting Quality Authentic Asian Buffet

Popiah Station

Quality Cafe at Quality Hotel Marlow are renowned by supper lovers in Singapore as a place to go for Taiwan Porridge Buffet. However, don't be misled by the name of Taiwan Porridge Buffet, expect to see buffet dishes to fill your stomach.

Helmed by Chef Donald Sai, with more than 27 years experience in F&B industry, Quality Cafe launched Authentic Asian Buffet for lunch. This buffet consist of many popular local dishes such as laksa, popiah, chicken rice, roast duck, cereal prawn, steamed sea bass with olive, otah and lots more from soup to desserts.

To start, I recommend you start with popiah. Popiah is a Hokkien style type of spring roll, where the skin are made thinly from sticky soft dough. The skin here is very moist and soft, with the right thickness. The vegetables, sweet sauce and chilli is well balance. The fillings is not wet and the crush peanuts gave the crunchy texture. The best part, there is chef stationed there to make sure you get the best popiah every time.

Popiah

Next is the bowl of Laksa. The ingredients here is very simple. Rice noodle, bean sprout, fish cake, boiled eggs, the laksa gravy, laksa leaf and chilli. The gravy has is quite thick and full of coconut flavour. In Peranakan terms, the lemak is quite shiok. Simple but delicious.

For main meal, the chicken rice here is a must try. The rice if fragrant and flavourful. The rice cooked to al-dente with a good chicken stock. The chicken is quite tender especially the thigh part, however the breast can be a bit though. The plus side, they also Thai Chicken Feet. Rather than chicken feet, it is more like the skin from the chicken feet. It is crunchy and springy in texture. The marination is just right for my palate, not overly spicy. They also provide the full condiments such as chilli, ginger juice, dark soy sauce and acar (spicy pickled cucumber)

Some dishes to accompany the chicken rice is their Otah and Roast Duck. The Otah is the Chef Special Dish and made in house in Quality Cafe's kitchen. It has a nice texture, smooth and resilient at the same time. It can be slightly salty, which Chef Donald mention is due to the Thai Chilli Paste. The roast duck has a nice crispy skin and the meat is very tender.

For fish lover, they serve a huge steam sea bass with dried turnip (cai bo). The sea bass is quite huge, about 50 cm long. The cooking method and olive really bring out the taste of sea bass. However, as it is left in the bain marie, the steam fish slowly become over cook and harden. The frog leg that are fried with spring onion and ginger here is also quite huge. It is one of the biggest size frog leg I ever see. I heard that the more frog legs you eat, the stronger your leg become in swimming.

Like many buffet places, there are some dishes that not up to standard. In this case, I would not suggest the Char Kway Teow, or any of their deep fried stuff.

If you have enough of your fill, time to move on to desserts. Build your won Cendol or Ice Kacang is available. You can choose your own ingredients to create your Singapore cold desserts just the way you like it. Or you can choose from range of peranakan desserts or goreng pisang with your coffee or tea.

The service staff here is very attentive and efficient to clear the dirty plates from your table. During our weekday lunch here, the cafe is pretty packed.

Overall, if you are looking for quality buffet of Singapore local food, you can give Quality Cafe a try. The price is very reasonable and you can get the authentic Singaporean food. See the brochure below for more details. Cheers!!
