Dapur Penyet – Authentic Indonesian Comfort Food

Bebek Penyet @ Daput Penyet

We found Dapur Penyet when we were looking for a place to sit while waiting for my turn to collect my items from a collection point in Centrepoint. The set-up of the shop is almost like any fast-food chain, however, instead of the usual Western fare, you get Indonesian food.

Our first time there, we tried Siomay ($7.50) and Batagor ($7.50). Siomay is steam Indonesian fish dumplings served with steamed cabbage, beancurd, hard-boiled egg and peanut sauce dipping. It is one of LD’s favourite Indonesian dishes and the version here got her approval. The fish dumplings are bouncy, tasty, while the peanut sauce is aromatic and packs with flavour.

Siomay
Meanwhile, the Batagor is the fried version of the fish dumplings. The ingredients are the same with siomay, except the fish dumplings are deep-fried.

Bebek Penyet ($10.50). Smashed Fried Duck. The fried duck has a crispy exterior, followed by fork-tender and succulent flesh. The flesh also infused with spices derive from long hours boiling in spices filled broth, while the deep frying just intensifies the flavour. The crispy crumbs on top also add different texture to the dish. The bebek penyet is usually served with sambal terasi (Indonesian shrimp paste sambal), but I ask for no chilli. I feel that I like the duck version better than the ayam penyet, as it has more flesh and is more succulent.

Bebek Penyet
Ayam Ijo ($7.50). Smashed Fried Chicken with Padang Green Chilli Sauce. LD got the breast part of the chicken instead of the thigh part. Although the exterior is crispy, the breast meat is dry. The Padang Green Chilli is very spicy and LD describes it as SHIOK!!. (Next time I need to remember to write down Chicken Thigh).

Ayam Ijo
Ikan Joget ($12.50). Fried Sundanese Dancing Fish. A uniquely Indonesian dish. The flesh of the tilapia fish is sliced in such a way, making the fish stand up after it is deep-fried. It has a crisp exterior with juicy flesh. While it is delicious, this dish can be better if it is crispier, so you can enjoy the crispy fins and tail like keropok.

The fried chicken and fish are served with fried crispy tofu and boiled cabbage. The staple does not come with your protein order. So, remember to order it separately. Nasi Putih ($1) - White rice.

Nasi Putih
The décor of the place is a typical fast-food setup. It is simple and functional. The service staff is friendly; however, you need to place your order at the counter, collect your drink and wait for the beeper to page you to collect your food. Everything is self-service, except for cleaning your table afterwards.

Overall, Dapur Penyet serves Indonesian style of comfort food. It is delicious and it will satisfy your Indonesian food cravings. Cheers!

Overly Cheezy – Cheese Overload Pizza [MEDIA DROP]

Cheezy Cannonballs Pizza
Overly Cheezy (“OC”) is a unique pizzeria located in the heartlands of Hougang. OC signature is the use of 5 different kind of cheese on every pizza, consist of Gruyere, Mozzarella, Emmental, Cheddar Orange and Parmesan. OC recipes are the results of collaboration with top chefs from Japan, Italy, France and Singapore.

The original media drop is a set meal for 2, consist of 1 Large Pizza, 1 Regular Pizza, 1 Cheezy Salted Egg Fries, 1 Chocolate Lava Cake and 1 bottle of soft drinks. I ordered Smoky Beef Salami Large, Cheezy Cannonballs Regular and Sprite for the drink.

My first impression, I like their packaging. The yellow cheese colour on the pizza boxes is very eye-catching and set the mood for a pizza feast. It is crystal clear that cheese will be the signature ingredient of the pizza.

The Pizza Box

Part of Set Meal for 2
When you opened the box of the smoky beef pizza, you will go WOW!! The cheese covers almost all the surface of then crust pizza, while the generous smoky beef toppings were swimming under it. The cheese is just delicious, combining the cheese pungent aroma, with savoury and umami flavours in each bite. The only drawback is the smoky beef is on the salty side; however, the kids just love it.

The cheezy cannonballs pizza is created with cheese lovers in mind. It is a combination of vine-ripened tomato sauce, cream cheese balls and parsley flakes. I like the concept; however, I feel the cream cheese balls are not suitable for the pizza. Since OC already uses 5 types of cheeses, they should do OC version of Margherita Pizza, loaded with lots and lots mozzarella to showcase the natural flavours of their cheeses and to have that cheese pull effect.

Cheezy Cannonballs Regular
Cheezy salted egg fries is just a crowd-pleaser. It is packed in a box that looks like a slice of cheese. The holes on the box similar to the holes on artisanal cheese, allow the fries to retain its texture over a long period. The texture of the fries remains crisp externally and moist internally. The salted egg powder coated the fries evenly, not forgetting the solid cheezy dip.

Cheezy Salted Egg Fries
Chocolate lava cake is solid. If you put it on a place, you will find the middle part still oozing with melted chocolate. Good to have it on its own or with a scoop of ice cream.

Chocolate Lava Cake
As we are a big family, I also ordered 2 large pizzas $33. My pick was Trufflicious Hawaiian and Trufflicious Wild Mushrooms. For these two special pizzas, there is an additional charge of $4.50 each. These two pizzas are just awesome. It uses signature creamy white truffle sauce to bind all the ingredients. The mushrooms toppings and ham plus pineapple are generous and you can’t get enough for it.

Trufflicious Wild Mushrooms - Large

Trufflicious Wild Mushrooms
So far, we only tried their classic crust, which is their hand-stretched thin crust. If you are looking for something different, OC also has special crust such as Milky Avocado Crust, Creamy Tomato Crust and Pâte Feuilletée Crust at an additional fee.

Trufflicious Hawaiian - Large
CBK Verdict: Super delicious pizza that everyone will enjoy (except for those who don’t eat cheese). The cream sauce and tomato base are very good, combine with generous toppings, they are the magic ingredients for delicious pizza. Better than most of franchise pizza brand and some artisanal pizzeria. We’ll sure order from Overly Cheezy again. Cheers!!

Full Disclosure: There was a mix up in our order during the delivery. Out of goodwill, OC absorbs the charge for the 2 additional large pizzas which was not part of the Media Drop.

Thank you very much, Dawn and Overly Cheezy Team for the Media Drop.

Nam Nam Noodle Bar - Fast Food Vietnamese Style

Raffles City Basement is food paradise. As a restaurateur you will like this place because the crowd is endless. There are office crowds during the weekdays and shopping crowds during the weekends. So if you want to know if you establishment is good enough or not, this is definitely the place to be.

My other half actually notice this place a week before we visit this place. She bought the Banh Mi (Vietnamese toasted baguettes – Vietnamese version of Subway) for take away. The baguettes is fresh and crispy. The combination of pate, pork belly, pickled and fresh vegetables really give explosion of taste in your mouth. The best Banh Mi in Singapore so far.

So as a reward for my Vietnamese homestay student for doing well this year, we decided to treat him to this place. This is a fuss free restaurant / bistro. The tables are set in rows and side by side to each other. There are also seating on the counter where you can see the chefs at work.

Here is the flow of eating in the restaurant. When you arrived, you wait in line, they will get you a seat. Nam Nam does not take reservation. When you are seated, decide on what you want eat, write in the order paper and go to the counter to pay. After payment collect, make sure you take your chopstick and napkins. They will deliver the food to you. When you get your food, eat and chop chop finish and get out. If not you can feel the stares of people waiting in line for your seats :)

So how is the food? We ordered the White cabbage salad ($5.90), Pho beef combination ($9.90) and Lime soda ($3). The white cabbage salad is more entrée, contain white cabbage, boiled chicken, fresh herbs, roasted potatoes and topped with sweet chilli dressing. It is refreshing, crunchy and you actually feel healthy eating this ha..ha..

White cabbage salad ($5.90)

The Pho Combination comes with beef steak slices, beef balls, beef shank, tendon, honey comb tribe. First taste, the soup. It is robust, clean with natural sweetness that comes from the long boiling process of the bones. The tendon and honey comb tribe is very tender, but with a nice springy texture. The beef steak slices is thinly slices and melts in your mouth. To sum up in one work is ….perfecto!!! The only thing that you need to watch out is the rice noodle. I find it a bit hard, I'll ask them to cook it longer or softer next time. Nam Nam claims that they do not use any MSG in their food.

Hanoi Pho Combination $9.90

The lime soda is serve in old style tin cup. It really got kick, the sourness and sweetness is well balance. What a refreshing drink.

Lime Soda $3

Overall I find this place is very interesting. Really a Vietnamese style of fast food and healthy as well. The food is excellent and fast, the price is reasonable and inclusive of GST, no fuss service and no service charge. what else can you ask for. We'll sure be back for more and bon appetit!!!
