Alaturka – Authentic Mediterranean and Turkish Cuisine

We were looking for a place to celebrate LD’s & our Godson’s birthday. Surprisingly, our Godson choose Mediterranean cuisine and his mum made a booking at Alaturka Mediterranean & Turkish Restaurant.

Located in Bussorah Street, nearby the iconic Arab Street, Alaturka fits right at home. Helmed by the most experienced Turkish chefs, Alaturka served authentic and marvellous Mediterranean cuisine. They are also awarded the Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand in 2016.

Alaturka Mediterranean & Turkish Restaurant

We started the meal with Hummus ($12.50) and Havuc Salata ($12.50). Whenever LD see a Hummus on the menu, it is a must-order item for her. The version here is smooth, creamy and packs with chickpea flavour. It is served with Ekmek bread that is soft and fluffy.

Hummus
Havuc Salata is a Turkish carrot salad. The peeled carrots are cooked with olive oil and then mixed with yoghurt and garlic. If you don’t like the raw carrot taste, don’t worry, the garlic and yoghurt remove most of the raw carrot taste.

Havuc Salata
When we were ordering, we notice the next table ordered this balloon type of bread. After we find it on the menu, we decided to add Lavas ($6) to our order. Served piping hot and in a balloon shape, we were in awe and took lots of photos of it. It is aromatic and tasted light and clean, yet addictive. You can just eat that on its own and try to finish it while it’s hot.

Lavas
Calamari ($18). Deep-fried breaded calamari, served with spiced mayonnaise. It was not a special dish, but everyone just enjoys it. Crispy exterior, followed by tender yet springy calamari rings.

Calamari
Etli Pide ($24). Pide is like the Turkish version of boat shape pizza with a different selection of toppings. We choose the seasoned coarse-ground lamb and cheese. The base is crisp with a soft chewy texture, while the ground lamb is meaty, well-seasoned and absent of the gamy taste. The cheese binds all the ingredients together, giving it the deserving umami flavour and the delicate chewy texture.

Etli Pide
Next up are the meat platter. Karisik Kebab ($59 for 2) and Alaturka Platter ($79 for 2). Both the platter has similar grilled meat such as Kuzu Pirzolla (Lamb Chop), Tavuk Sis (Boneless Grilled Chicken Thigh) and Kanat (Chicken Wings). The Karisik kebab has Köfte (3 lambs and beef meatballs), while the Alaturka Platter has Adana Chicken / Lamb (Marinated minced meat, hand-formed skewer) and Patlican Lamb Kebab (Ground lamb and eggplant skewers). We also ordered extra Kuzu Pirzolla.

Alaturka Platter
Let me not bored you with the details, because at that time, I also did not know the specifics of it. Let’s make it simple, the chickens are juicy, succulent, super tender and well marinated. While most of the kebabs that I tried previously were dried, Alaturka version beat them hands down. They are moist, juicy and the seasoning is spot on. You can still taste the flavour of the meat, instead of being drowned by spices. The Lamb Chop is overcooked, but it was very forgiving as still remains juicy.

Karisik Kebab with extra Kuzu Pirzolla
Each platter is served with buttered rice, greens and house sauce. The rice is fragrant, aromatic and tasty. While the vegetables are tossed with a balsamic vinegar dressing. The house sauce is the must-try here. Instead of dunking your meat into it, I suggest you mixed it with the rice. It is just delicious!!

Karisik Kebab with extra Kuzu Pirzolla
For desserts, we settle on Kunefe ($15) A Turkish dessert made from shredded phyllo dough, butter, cheese, ground pistachios and milk. Absolutely love this dessert. The combination of the crispy texture, savoury and sweet as well. We described the taste like Chao Da Bee Hoon with Cream (in a delicious way). It is claimed to be Turkey’s finest dessert, I totally agree with them.

Kunefe
Alaturka has two dining sections, indoor and outdoor. The indoor dining room is a bit small, but it is decorated in traditional Turkish lights, carpet and plates. The outdoor area feels like you are dining in a Mediterranean restaurant near the beach. Although the place is packed, the service remains friendly and attentive. We brought a cake to celebrate our Godson’s birthday and they even plated nicely for us. Plus they took our photos with those fun placards and print a hardcopy for our memento.

Overall, it was our first time dining at Alaturka and we can’t wait to make a return visit there. The food is authentic and delicious, accompanied by friendly service. For those who never tried the Mediterranean or Turkish food, this is a good place for your first experience. For those who like it, you must visit Alaturka. Cheers!!

The Parlour Mirage – Good Food X Good Beer [MEDIA INVITE]

Yakitori Platter @ The Parlour Mirage

The Parlour Mirage is a craft beer taproom / restaurant that recently opens along Owen Road at Farrer Park neighbourhood. The Parlour Mirage (‘TPM’) is on a quest to serve uproarious fusion cuisine and dream-essenced craft beers where you least expected.

The Parlour Mirage

The craft beers on the tap are carefully curated based on their unique taste profile, brewery and most of them are highly rated in Untappd, App usually used by those beer connoisseurs. To partner, the craft beer is the culinary delight inspired by modern Japanese and Mediterranean cuisine, helmed by all-femme kitchen.

Staircase to 2nd Floor
While the gastronomic adventure is happening on the1st floor, TPM is part of a greater ecosystem. In collaboration with The Parlour Singapore, located on the 2nd floor, a newly opened artist hub that houses music studio, creative studios and more, founded by artist, Jaye. It is a conducive environment for artists to learn, create, produce and share. There is also an Ableton Certified Training Centre and Second Life the flea market. The overall setup is just super cool.

Second Life the flea market
Back to the 1st floor, we started our tasting with Chicken Karaage ($12). Huge chunks of chicken thigh marinated in sake, sugar, soy sauce, ginger and garlic, then deep-fried to perfection. The exterior is crispy, while the interior is juicy and succulent. I can taste the marinate in the flesh. Though it is served in mayonnaise, I feel the chicken is tasty enough on its own.

Chicken Karaage

Chicken Karaage
Fried Cheese ($10). It looks like tater tots; however, this little bite-size popcorn is filled with aged cheddar. Crispy exterior followed with a strong aged cheddar cheese flavour. If you don’t like the strong flavour of cheese, you might want to give this a miss.

Fried Cheese

Yakitori Platter, [clockwise from top left] consist of Eggplant ($4.50), Pork Belly ($6.50), Salmon Belly ($9.50), Chicken Thigh ($4.50), Hokubee Beef Cubes ($9.5), King Oyster Mushroom ($6.50), Quail Eggs ($4.50), Okra ($4.50). US Scallop ($9.50) and Tsukune ($6.50).

Yakitori Platter

Yakitori Platter
The Yakitori is actually a perfect pairing with the craft beer. Alas, I am unable to consume alcohol, so I have to stick with my ice water.

Devil’s Peak Lager (South Africa) & Heretic Caramel Moo’chiato (USA)

My picks for the yakitori are: tsukune, these mince chicken balls are juicy and succulent. Grilled perfectly, resulting in the melts in your mouth sensation. The fattiness from the salmon belly produces a crisp yet flaky bite of the salmon flesh.

Tsukune

Salmon Belly
Meanwhile, the texture of King Oyster Mushrooms with the sweet yakitori sauce is just irresistible. The okra yakitori taste really surprised me. Frankly, I am not an okra fan, however, the version here is slightly charred and delivery a crisp texture absents of the gooey texture that I dislike most. Yum yum.

King Oyster Mushroom

Okra
Instead of ordering the yakitori individually, it will be more worth it to order the platter.

Staircase to 3rd floor

Studio Stools
Served together with the yakitori platter is sharing plate of pita and dips platter. Consist of [from top anti-clockwise] Guacamole, Hummus, Pesto, Tzaziki, Fried Mantou, Asian Slaw, Pita Bread and Sweet Butter Corn. Frankly, my first impression is that the balance is out of whack as there are more dips compared to the pita bread and fried mantou. Later on, it was explained to us that the dips are to be paired with the yakitori as well. Now, it makes sense.

Pita & Dips Platter
I like the unique brown colour pesto and Asian slaw made from purple cabbage. Both dishes offer a unique twist of flavour, yet helps to offset the fattiness from the yakitori. The sweet butter corn is delicious; however, the portions are just too small even for 1 person including the pita bread as well.

If you need something more filling, TPM also offers donburi. Hokubee Beef Don ($24). The Hokubee Meltique Beef offer a nice smoky aroma and juicy beef texture, while the Kombu Cream with homemade pickled radish, chopped spring onion and soft boiled egg deliver a creamy umami flavour with a touch of tanginess.

Hokubee Beef Don
We end the meal with Stracciatella ($15). A soft Italian cheese using buffalo milk, mixed with honey, nuts, grilled sweet corn and grilled plum. An explosion of flavours in your mouth. Sweet, savoury, crunchy, smoky, crisp and creamy. Although this dish is geared towards a savoury dish, I think this will work well for desserts.

Stracciatella

Stracciatella
The décor of TPM was inspired by Japan’s gold-accented Tottori dessert and beige dunes. The word Mirage in the restaurant name can be attributed to the Mirage sighting in the dessert. Though the restaurant is filled with a rich gold colour, you will feel at ease as due to the balance colour combination. Of course, the 12 craft beer taps under the Singapore palm tree logo will be the centre of TPM universe.

The Parlour Mirage

Overall, the Japanese x Mediterranean cuisine at The Parlour Mirage is geared as a perfect companion for the craft beers. The Yakitori, Chicken Karaage and Stracciatella are a must-try here. Cheers!!

Roots Mediterranean – Lavish Christmas Brunch [MEDIA INVITE]

Wellington Fillet @ Roots Mediterranean

Celebrate this joyous Christmas with lavish brunch at Roots Mediterranean. This Christmas, Roots Mediterranean has prepared a scrumptious brunch for you to satiate your festive appetite and spend a gratifying afternoon with your loved ones.

The Menu

The Christmas Brunch is split into 5 sections – ‘Tapas, Mezze and Antipasti’, ‘From the Slicer’, ‘Craving Station’, ‘Served on the Table’, and ‘The Sweet End’.

Sample of Tapas, Mezze and Antipasti

Sample of Tapas, Mezze and Antipasti

We started our Christmas Brunch tasting with an assorted bread basket. You get different texture and flavours. Our favourite is the crisp layer pastry, I later found the name as Sfogliatella. It is light, crisp and touch of sweetness is just right for a starter instead of desserts. I also like the pineapple Danish pastry.

Highlights from the Christmas Menu are:

Oysters Cava served on the table. These plump and brainy oysters can be eaten with a few drops of lemon juice or with cava dressing. They are a delicious companion with a glass of Prosecco or Chianti.

Prosecco

Wellington Fillet at Carving Station. The Wellington Fillet is an irresistible dish, as the beef fillet are initially seared, then baked in the blanked of mushrooms and pastry. The result is tender and delicious beef, topped with thick mushroom and red wine sauce.

Roasted Lamb at Carving Station. Roasted Lamb is a popular Christmas dish in the Mediterranean, it is also LD’s favourite roast. The charred looking exterior of the lamb helps to seal the natural juice inside the meat. Resulting in tender, succulent meat. For those worried about the gaminess of the lamb, this roast lamb leg is almost free of it. This dish is also served with potato wedges, onion, tomato and olives.

Roasted Wild Range French Yellow Chicken, Truffle Butter and Roasted Potatoes (served on the table). Delightful, truffle filled aromatic dish. The flesh is juicy and succulent, while the skin is paper-thin and crispy. The melted truffle butter is basked on top of the chicken and roast potatoes before serving. Yummy.

Pizza Lobster and Prawns served on the table. The exquisite version of pizza here. The huge tiger prawns and lobster is seated on Roots Signature pizza base. While the prawns and lobster are delicious, we find the innocent-looking burrata is the ingredient that holds everything together.

For the sweet ending, don’t miss out of the traditional Panettone with Tiramisu Cream and the Christmas Dessert Buffet.
