[CLOSED] Clementi Tze Char – Delicious Hearty Tze Char [MEDIA INVITE]

Marmite Chicken

Calling for the residents in the West Coast area, Clementi Tze Char (‘CTC’) has been sizzling their wok and ready to tantalise your taste buds. Located at Tastebud Foodcourt by Jus Delish Group Singapore you can look forward to hearty and delicious Tze Char dishes.

Clementi Tze Char

One of their signature dishes is KL Hokkien Mee ($4.50). This dark colour noodle dish made popular in KL but well-liked by diners in Singapore as well. The version at CTC uses thick noodles like the one in KL, which have a QQ texture with a solid noodle bite in it. It is stir-fried with pork lard and pork oil, covered with thick, sweet and tasty dark soy sauce to inducing the signature Wok Hei together with the umami punch. If you are a huge fan of pork lard like us, you might want to ask for more when you order this dish.

Marmite Chicken ($10 for Small, $14 for Medium, $18 for Large). Diced chicken thigh meat cooked with marmite sauce. The chicken is tender and succulent, while the marmite sauce really shines and absorbs into the chicken. You can easily finish one plate of rice with this dish alone. I called it a “rice thief” dish.

Nyonya (Assam) Fish Head ($20). We had a choice of curry fishhead or assam fishhead, which are their speciality. We decided on the latter. At first, I was sceptical as I saw the fishhead are not fully cover with assam sauce. So, I tried to spread the sauce evenly on the fish.

Nyonya (Assam) Fish Head
The fishhead is fresh and the assam sauce is thick and intense. I like the tanginess from the chopped pineapple, tomato and the sharp flavour from the lemon leaf. To my surprise, the assam sauce manage to penetrate into the fish meat. It was a very good dish and the sauce goes well with a plate of white rice.

Jiang Nan Sheng Mian ($6). LD favourite Tze Char dish. The egg noodle is fried till crispy and covered with seafood egg gravy. The gravy is filled with solid seafood flavour and the gooey texture helps it to cling on to the noodles. Yum Yum.

Imperial Prosperity Chicken (帝王富贵鸡). One of the dishes that is in the pipeline. The kampong chicken is steamed with Chinese herbs such as Dang Gui (当归), goji berry (杞子), Yu zhu (玉竹), Pao shen (泡参), Dang shen (当参) and many more. The chicken is tender, succulent and the flesh easily fall off the bones. The best part of the dish is the broth that is infused with the Chinese herbs and essence of the chicken. It is savoury, gelatinous and tastes healthy. Superb.

Overall, from the dishes that we tried at CTC, we find the food to be hearty and delicious. Do take note that CTC dishes can be bold and tasty. Give this place a try if you are around Clementi or West Coast side of Singapore. Cheers!!

[CLOSED] 101 Seafood Gourmet – A Gem in Chong Pang Market [MEDIA INVITE]

101 Seafood Gourmet is a new Zi Char restaurant in the crowded block 101 Yishun Ave 5. After we parked our car, we took a wrong turn exploring the block. LD and I count there was about 5 other seafood Zi Char restaurants in that block itself. Looks like the competition is going to be stiffed.

To be exact, 101 Seafood Gourmet ('101SG') is located beside POSB ATM, which is directly near the entrance of the block 101 carpark. Although you can not see the shop directly from the road, keep a look out for their brightly lit signboard on the pavement.

We started the tasting session with 101SG signature dish: Lala Bee Hoon with Superior Broth ($20 for Large). This white colour looking broth actually packs punch. It was robust and peppery, with a touch of sweetness from the clams. The thin, smooth and silky bee hoon soaked up the richness of the broth, to provide a good base for the fresh and juicy clams. A touch of heat from the pepper, helps to arouse your appetite for the meal.

Crab with Bee Hoon ($38 for 2 crabs during this promotion period). Yes, the price is correct and value for money. Of course don't expect Sri Lankan crabs, instead 101SG uses Indonesian Crabs, to be exact the female crabs which was fresh, sweet and filled with roe. The broth was a little bland to my liking and missing much of the crab flavour, especially for thick bee hoon. Although the crab was fresh and meaty, it was not something that I will order if I return.

While we were waiting for the rest of the group to come, I ordered Energiser Healthy Fruit Juice ($6.90) consist of orange and passion fruit. It is naturally refreshing with a hint of tanginess from the passion fruit.

Good Year Seafood Village – Tasty Food at Secluded Tampines Ave

Goodyear Seafood Village is located in Tampines Avenue, just off Tampines Link nearby the temple. Although this place is slightly secluded, don't be surprised when you see a full car park especially during dinner time. We actually have know this place for a while back, as their traditional fish head steamboat is very good. However last year the food quality fell dramatically. It seem that everything is back to the good times, with new signature dishes to tantalise your taste buds.

The current Goodyear Seafood has two sections. There is a section which is air-conditioned which filled up quite fast, and the coffeeshop / outdoor. This review is based on our two recent visits to this establishment.

Assam Fish Head ($25). One of the Chef's recommendation dish. The fish head is fresh and done properly. The Assam gravy which was thick, tangy, slightly spicy and sweet really opens up your appetite and really goes well with the white rice.

Bak Kut Teh – Pontian Style ($11) & Kidney and Liver for BKT ($5). One of the recent addition to this restaurant. The BKT is has a stronger herbal flavour compare to the Teochew BKT version, however the herbs not as strong as Klang BKT. The soup is very comforting, while the meat is tender and huge. Little Devil and I actually like the extra care in the way they serve the liver and kidney. To ensure that it is not over cook after they blanched it to the right doneness, they serve the soup separately. So when you eat the liver and kidney, you will get the right texture.

Salted Egg Fish skin ($15). What else can you ask for? Crispy fish skin with the saltiness of salted egg. This dish basically just speak for itself. Cereal Beancurd ($16). The egg beancurd is fried properly and the soft texture of the cereal is just so inviting to accompany the rice or other dishes. The price of the beancurd is slightly overpriced though.

For the vegetables, we tried Bean Sprout with Salted Fish ($10) & French Bean ($7). The bean sprout is quite oily but has a good “wok hei”. The French Bean is fresh and crunchy, topped with mince dried prawns. Simple yet delicious.

During our first visit, the service staff recommended German Roast Pork Knuckle ($22). This dish is actually quite disappointing. The skin is not fried evenly as some of the skin is chewy instead of crispy. The sauce and the pork knuckle seems does not goes well with each other. Although the staff is very proud of their pork knuckle, I personally would not order it again.

German Roast Pork Knuckle

Service in this establishment is very minimum. There is only two service staff that take the order, so during the busy period, it is very difficult to get their attention. The rest of the support staff will help in delivering food, getting rice or drink and clean up the table. So do keep your expectation of the service in check. At least there is no Service Charge popping up in your bill.

Overall, Goodyear Seafood Village is a Zi Char establishment. They have some nice dishes on their Chef's Recommendation section and the BKT is definitely a must try. Price is very reasonable and the best part is they do not charge GST and Service Tax. For weekend dinner, just make sure you make reservation if you want the seat in air conditioned section. Cheers!!
