MR. BAE - SPICY BAE

Meet MR. BAE the newest kids on the block offering Premium Bak Kwa in welcoming the year of Golden Rat.

This year, MR. BAE will tease our palate with their special creation, SPICY BAE – Premium Mala Bak Kwa. Each Bak Kwa is made with a fusion of Chinese and Japanese Mala ingredients. They are then carefully marinated onto the meat for up to 1 month and barbecued to perfection.

MR. BAE - SPICY BAE - Packaging
When LD and I received the SPICY BAE, we notice the packaging is very attractive and eye-catching. The first impression comes from the golden paper bag. Following that is the blue colour SPICY BAE box. Each of Premium Mala Bak Kwa is individually packed in a golden pouch to ensure its juiciness and mala “force” remains strong.

MR. BAE - SPICY BAE - Packaging

Once you rip open the individual sachets, the Mala aroma will tease your olfactory (smell) sense. We shared this unique bak kwa with our colleagues and family members, majority of us likes juiciness and tenderness of the BBQ meat. It is aromatic and after a few bites, the numbness and the spiciness of the Mala creeping up and HITS you. The spiciness level of SPICY BAE is will depend on individual ability to handle spicy, most of them feel that it is manageable and spicy level should be at Medium; Therefore, it can be enjoyed by everyone who loves Mala.

Pineapple Tarts Singapore – The Best MYIM Pineapple Tarts in SG [MEDIA TASTING]

Pineapple Tarts by Pineappletarts.sg

Pineapple tarts, one of the must-have snacks for Chinese New Year celebration in Singapore. Choosing the best pineapple tarts is a serious business here. Almost all traditional and online publications will create a list of the best pineapple tarts in Singapore.

So which one is the best? Well, I am not going to put this debate to bed, but I will recommend one for your consideration this year.

Thanks to the folks at Pineapple Tarts Singapore, I received three types of Pineapple Tarts at my doorstep during earlier this month. Those pineapple tarts are:
- Melt In Your Mouth – Pineapple Tarts (The Original Recipe - $22.90)

My Pineapple Tarts Goodies

My first impression of the Pineapple Tarts is their clean looking modern packaging. Instead of the traditional plastic container with a red top, the version is here is with a silver cover. Each piece of the pineapple tarts is displayed clearly.

LD and I started our tasting with Melt In Your Mouth – Pineapple Tarts. This original version has a nice buttery aroma, followed with moist and buttery pastry and deliciously well-balanced fillings. The size of the pineapple tart is about the size of regular fishballs.

Melt In Your Mouth – Pineapple Tarts

Next is the YOlkLO – Salted Egg Pineapple Tarts. The aroma of the salted eggs immediately came to our nose. The salted egg yolk is folded into the pastry then shaped in the round shape around the pineapple fillings. The pastry tasted dryer compared to the Melt In Your Mouth version, however, the texture remains crumbly. The saltiness in the pastry enhances the sweetness of the pineapple fillings.

The final pineapple tarts that we sample is the Cheezylicious – Cheese Pineapple Tarts. When we open the bottle, the ‘powerful’ smell of the parmesan cheese filled our nose. The pastry’s moist level is lower than the other two, however, the texture remains crumbly. It feels like eating a blue cheese pineapple tart. I suggest this only for those that can handle strong cheese aroma.

Cheezylicious – Cheese Pineapple Tarts

This year, Pineappletarts.sg has introduced Siao LA – Mala Pineapple Tarts ($27.90). Imagine enjoying Mala hotpot or Mala Xiang Guo in dessert form. We did not try the Mala version, as we are not a big fan of Mala. If you are a daredevil and can take the heat, you can also try their Pineapple Tarts Singapore Spicy Challenge (Details available on their website)

Do take note that Pineapple Tarts from Pineappletarts.sg has No Preservative Added; Fully Homemade and Handmade. Each bottle contains 20 pieces of tarts. Free Delivery for orders above $100. As no preservative is used, the pineapple tarts Best Consumed within 6 weeks.

Melt In Your Mouth – Pineapple Tarts

Other than Pineapple Tarts, Pineapple Tarts Singapore also sell other Chinese New Yeargoodies including CNY Cookies (Kueh Bangkit, Almond Cookies, Cashew Nut Cookies, etc), Prawn Rolls, Munchies, Crab Sticks, Love Letters and Kueh Lapis.

Ginger – Prosperous Reunion and Gathering at Ginger [MEDIA INVITE]

Baby Lobster with Abalone Sauce

Usher in the Year of The Boar with the new creations by Executive Chef Vincent Aw at Ginger, all-day dining restaurant for PARKROYAL on Beach Road. The luxurious buffet line up for Chinese New Year (‘CNY’) is definitely something to look forward to.

Part of the CNY Spread at Ginger

Signature dishes for this Chinese New Year are:

Baby Lobster with Abalone Sauce. Baby Lobster is one of the signature ala minute stations at Ginger. For this CNY, it is cooked and served with Abalone Sauce. The baby lobster is fresh, juicy, succulent and springy, served with a clean and robust Abalone sauce. The combination of delicate broth and lobster is superb and definitely got my two thumbs up. I actually have to stop myself from ordering a few more as I want to try other dishes.

Baby Lobster with Abalone Sauce

Baked Salmon with Fried Salmon Skin. I am not a big fan of baked salmon normally, however, it just irresistible at Ginger. The flesh of the salmon is pinkish, moist and flaky, basked with creamy seafood sauce. On top of the dish is a deep-fried crispy salmon skin, which I can’t resist.

Baked Salmon with Fried Salmon Skin.

DIY Ginger’s Prosperity Yu Sheng. This is the time to showcase your creativity in designing your own Yu Sheng. The ingredients are provided and it is up to you to add the rest. I suggest go beyond the Yu Sheng station and add the Crispy Salmon Skin from the Baked Salmon, the assortment of ‘Keropok’ and lots of salmon sushi into the mix. Huat Ah!!!

Braised Dried Oyster with Sea Moss and Abalone Fried Rice are available in the hot food isle. Black Sea Moss (a.k.a. Fatt Choy) represent one of the most auspicious ingredients during Chinese New Year, representing prosperity in the new year. I personally like the braised dried oyster, the solid gooey gravy with the crunchy broccoli. If I ‘struck it rich’ in the New Year due to this dish, it is definitely an added bonus.

Meanwhile, abalone is known to look like the traditional gold ingot. Therefore, it hopes to bring you more money in the coming year. Alas, I only managed to try the fried rice, while these mini abalones got whacked by others.

Abalone Fried Rice

Grilled Half Shell Scallop and Satay at the Live Station. The juicy and springy scallops are baked just right, you can easily savour half a dozen at one go. The assorted satays have a slightly charred exterior, juicy and well-marinated flesh that can be consumed on its own or with the thick satay sauce. I personally recommend the pork satay.

Grilled Half Shell Scallop

Grilled Half Shell Scallop

Satay Pork Collar, combining the western style of cooking with local flavours. Tender, succulent, coated with satay flavour externally.

Soft Shell Crab. Perfectly fried, with crispy exterior and crab filled delicious interior. You won’t feel the oiliness in this dish, despite it is been deep fried. Surprisingly, it is better than those served in most of the Japanese restaurant in the market.

Soft Shell Crab

Abalone Salad and Bak Kwa with Pineapple Salad. A very good appetizer that uses the CNY ingredients. The abalone is crunchy and refreshing, while the pineapple with bak kwa, balance up the sweetness from the bak kwa seasoning.

For desserts, there will be Steamed Nian Gao, Pineapple Tarts and Chinese Eight Treasure Longan Soup with Glutinous Rice Ball. You will definitely have you filled with all these Chinese New Year treats.

As the food served during the Chinese New Year period is on a rotational basis, you will also look forward to Braised Pig Ear Terrine with Chinese Herbs at the Salad Station, Singapore’s favourite Black Pepper Crab, Cereal Crab and Roasted Suckling Pig with Kumquat Compote.

CNYDelivery.com – Delivering CNY Goodies to Your Doorstep [MEDIA INVITE]

Almond Cookies

This New Year has been a hectic period for me. It seems the days have gone in a flash, it is almost February. The preparation checklist of things to buy and prepare for Chinese New Year are getting longer and longer. Don’t you wish that there is a shop that can deliver your Chinese New Year Goodies and delicious in taste as well?

I was contacted to do a review for CNYDelivery.com, delivering Chinese New Year goodies made by Poon Confectionary. I thought it was interesting and I agreed to it. My package contained Almond Cookies (杏仁酥) ($15.50 / $14.41), Pork Floss Roll Snack (肉松粒) ($16.90 / $15.72), and Cheese Pineapple Tarts (起司黄梨) ($17.90 / $16.65)

A few facts about Poon Confectionary:
  • It is established in 1971 in Pahang Malaysia.
  • In 2018, started their CNYDelivery.com in Singapore
  • Their Goodies contain No Preservatives and No Added Flavouring & MSG.
  • Every Single Cookie Homemade.
  • They are delicious. Their Almond Cookies are superb, according to Chubby Botak Koala.
  • One of the most affordable homemade CNY Goodies in Singapore and they are offering 7% OFF for 2019 CNY Launch Promo.

Almond Cookies definitely got my two thumbs up. The exterior is crunchy, and once you bit into it, it just crumbles and melts in your mouth. The almond is fragrant, has a perfect balance between almond and butter. I brought it to LD office and our colleagues just keep popping them in like no tomorrow.

Pork Floss Roll Snack looks like a mini wanton. It is crispy externally and filled with sweet pork floss internally. Unlike the triangle version, the wrapper is very minimum as to allow the maximum pork floss fillings. Good to nibble on.

Cheers Pineapple Tarts, only for those who like a combination of pungent and sweet. The pastry is buttery and crumbly, while the layer of cheese coating externally infused the pungent aroma to this pineapple tart. The pineapple fillings are light in colour and not as sweet as I expected. I personally prefer the one with a darker colour and dense filling. I think I will prefer the Golden Pillow Pineapple Tart or the normal Pineapple Tart instead of the Cheese Pineapple Tart.
