Hey Kee – HK Style Seafood in Singapore

Hey Kee HK Seafood (“Hey Kee”) is a Retro HK Dai Pai Dong-style live seafood restaurant located in Guillemard Village in Geylang. Hey Kee occupied the ground floor of the main building, setting a lively retro Hong Kong theme complete with fish tanks filled with live seafood such as lobsters, crabs, prawns, clams and fish.

Hey Kee
The restaurant dining area is divided into “Indoor” and outdoor. Although you are seated indoors, it is decorated like you are seated outdoors, just like a Dai Pai Dong in Hong Kong. Filled with bright lights, signboard and they even include a barber shop for the fun of it. The outdoor seating is simpler, filled with round tables and red foldable chairs. There are huge air conditioners and retractable awnings to the diners cool and dry.

Outdoor Dining Area
This review is based on our two visits to Hey Kee.

Double Boiled Pig Stomach Chicken Soup with White Pepper [$36.80]. Hongkongers are known for their love of the soup. Therefore, we decided to order one to start our meal. The pig stomach soup is robust, sweet and with a hint of pepper. Unlike the Singapore version, the pepper taste is very mild, it is more soothing than spicy awakening. Meanwhile, the pig stomach is soft with a bit of chewiness.

Double Boiled Pig Stomach Chicken Soup with White Pepper
Live Clam Black Bean Sauce [$25]. The clams are fresh, plump and juicy, while the medley of cut chilli, onion and a generous dollop of black bean sauce infused a familiar flavour in this dish.

Live Clam Black Bean Sauce
Deep Fried Cuttlefish with Salt & Pepper [$20.80]. This is probably the dish that I associated closely with Hong Kong’s style of food. The cuttlefish is tender, brownish, and coated with aromatic salt and pepper that almost looks like a curry powder. The version here is very good

Deep Fried Cuttlefish with Salt & Pepper
HK Street Style Shark Fin [$12.80]. A very generous portion of the HK Street Style Shark Fin. Don’t expect to be served real shark fin here, but the robust and gooey soup is very comforting. LD enjoyed this dish.

HK Street Style Shark Fin
Signature Braised Lamb Stew with Beancurd Skin [$42.80]. A dish commonly served during the cold season in HK. The lamb is tender, not gamy and fork tender. I like the fermented taste in the gravy, the aroma and it blends nicely with thick cuts of radish. This beancurd stick is still a bit though, it needs more braising time to soften it and absorb the gravy.

Signature Braised Lamb Stew with Beancurd Skin
Temple Street Crispy Roast Chicken (L) [$39.80]. It is one of the dishes that you need to pre-order during reservations. The skin is paper thin, super crispy and coated with crispy garlic. The flesh is tender and succulent, even for the breast. It is one of the yummiest roast chickens I ever tried.

Temple Street Crispy Roast Chicken (L)
Steamed Fish with Chopped Yellow Chilli - Turbot [$108]. This is the first time I have a turbot for steamed fish. The fish is very fat and covered with the chopped yellow chilli. Surprisingly, the yellow chilli tasted sweet and tangy, almost pickled-like. Together with soy sauce, it infused sweet, savoury and umami flavour to the fish.

Steamed Fish with Chopped Yellow Chilli - Turbot
Red Grouper – Steamed Hong Kong Style. The red grouper is different compared to the turbot. The flesh is firm and bouncy and it did not absorb much of the superior soy sauce.

Red Grouper – Steamed Hong Kong Style
HK Style Sauteed Chives with Dried Shrimp [$23.80] & Sizzling Kai Lan with Dried Prawns in Claypot [$23.80]. Two types of vegetables we tried at Hey Kee. They both have the same characteristics, crunchy and a bit oily. The dried prawns were supposed to add more flavour, but it seemed to be an overkill for me.

HK Style Sauteed Chives with Dried Shrimp
Sizzling Kai Lan with Dried Prawns in Claypot
Stir-Fried Lobster with Potato Noodles in Superior Broth – Australia Lobster [$148/kg]. This was a treat from our Thai Friends. The noodle is smooth, silky coated in rich and creamy superior stock. The lobster flesh is firm and bouncy. Well, I enjoy the noodle and the gravy, instead of the flesh of the lobster.

To the carbs, we tried Supreme Soy Sauce Fried HK Noodles (S) [$12.80] and Signature “Wok Hei” Hor Fun with Beef [$12.80]. Both of them are excellent. The fried HK noodles are thin, silky and loaded with umami flavours from the Supreme Soy Sauce.

Supreme Soy Sauce Fried HK Noodles (S)
The Hor Fun is just heavenly. Solid “Wok Hei”, yummy seasoning, while the egg, beansprout and sliced beef complement the silky rice sheets nicely.

Signature “Wok Hei” Hor Fun with Beef
Signature Claypot Seafood Porridge [Market Price]. A signature Hong Kong Congee. The porridge is smooth, silky and infused with the sweetness of the seafood. The prawns and clams are fresh. It is a very comforting dish, though it is missing the you tiao.

Signature Claypot Seafood Porridge
Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple [$22.80 Large]. We ordered this as the finale during our second visit. The deep-fried pork is crispy, while the sauce is sweet and tangy. The use of hawthorn in the sauce shows that they are not messing around with this dish.

Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple
Service is good, friendly and efficient. However, once all your dishes are served, it can be difficult to get their attention. The boss also comes out to check on the quality of the food and to get feedback from the customers.

Menu P3
CBK verdict: Hey Key serves solid Hong Kong Dai Pai Dong dishes, plus the overall quality of the food is very good and very close to the taste that we get in Hong Kong. Don’t miss out on their Signature Claypot Seafood Porridge, Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple, Steamed Fish with Chopped Yellow Chilli, Temple Street Roast Chicken and the Supreme Soy Sauce Fried HK Noodles. Kanpai!! Cheers!!

Diamond Kitchen – Crab Party [MEDIA INVITE]

Black Pepper Crab @ Dimond Kitchen

Calling Crab Lovers, Diamond Kitchen is having their crab promotions. 3 Sri Lankan Crab per Set, they can cook in more than 20 different styles and priced between $49.90 to $55.90. This crab promotions is available until 31 January 2021.

Crab promo Menu
We tried 3 different cooking style of crabs starting with Mongolian Crab. My first time trying this style of crab. The crabs are fresh and juicy cooked in Mongolian style sauce, which has a touch creaminess, peppery and a hint of curry powder. It is unique and I don’t mind ordering this again.

Mongolian Crab

Mongolian Crab
Salted Egg Yolk Crab (Dry). The crabs are coated with salted egg yolk batter and deep-fried till the batter is crispy. Though the salted egg coating is nice, the crabs spend a bit too much time in the frying oil, resulting in slight dryness in the meat. For Sri Lankan crabs, I would prefer the Salted Egg Yolk Wet version.

Salted Egg Yolk Crab (Dry)
For Salted Egg Yolk Crab dry version, Diamond Kitchen (“DK”) can consider using soft-shell crabs instead of Sri Lankan crabs. The soft-shell crab won’t take long to cook and the combination of sweet juicy flesh with crispy salted egg yolk coating will be amazing. This dish will also attract those customers that do not like to get their fingers. I am just salivating thinking about this.

Salted Egg Yolk Crab (Dry)
Black Pepper Crab. The most memorable crab dish for the night. The crabs are sweet and fresh, blend nicely with the black pepper sauce packs with a solid peppery flavour. One word to describe it, Yummy!

Black Pepper Crab
Champagne Pork Ribs ($24 for Medium). A signature dish of DK. The boneless pork ribs are crisp and juicy, evenly coated with caramelised champagne sauce. The sauce is sweet and refreshing at the same time.

Champagne Pork Ribs

Champagne Pork Ribs
La la Bee Hoon ($24 for Medium). Smooth and silky bee hoon cooked with clam infused broth. The soup is naturally sweet and absorbs into the bee hoon. DK version of la la bee hoon is very generous with the pepper, delivering a nice warm flavour in each slurp of the broth. A very comforting dish, especially during this rainy season.

La La Bee Hoon

La La Bee Hoon
Three Egg Spinach ($21 for Medium). One of my favourite spinach dishes. The broth is robust, while three eggs covered most of the surface of this dish. The wolfberry added a nice touch of sweetness in this savoury dish.

Three Egg Spinach

Three Egg Spinach
Pumpkin Beancurd ($21for Medium). A very tasty tofu dish. The tofu is smooth, silky and delicate. The pumpkin sauce is robust, creamy and infused with seafood flavour. A surprising burst of flavour in this ordinary-looking dish.

Pumpkin Beancurd

Pumpkin Beancurd
Beef Hor fun ($10 for small). A traditional beef hor fun style, plated in rustic style. The gravy is very solid and the portion is very generous. However, the hor fun lacks the wok hei x-factor, plus some part of the noodle is lumpy and not silky.

Beef Hor Fun
Pumpkin & Gingko Yam Paste ($16 for small). A tasty thick yam paste. The pumpkin slices and gingko provided a contrasting flavour to the yam paste. Meanwhile the coconut cream slightly diluted, I was hoping that it is thicker and creamier.

Due to the safe distancing measure, the restaurant setting becomes very spacious. The place is brightly lit and the use of white table cloth and golden colour chairs allow to create a modern Chinese restaurant setup. Located in Laguna Park Condominium make the restaurant isolated, however, through its delicious dishes, it has attracted a long list of loyal customers.

Overall, the current Sri Lankan crab promotions are value for money. Most of their dishes are well executed and delivery solid flavours. Don’t expect a creative fusion cuisine, instead look forward to comforting Chinese cuisine. Cheers!!

Thank you very much, Kristine and Diamond Kitchen Team for hosting us.

Famous Kitchen – Islandwide Delivery Menu [MEDIA DROP]

Our Food
The Famous Kitchen (“TFK”) is a casual family-style restaurant located in Sembawang. It specialises in Nanyang Cuisine and Seafood offerings, based on Teochew, Hokkien and Cantonese culture assimilated into Southeast Asia. You can also find other dishes inspired by owner Jeffery Foo’s travel around China. As Singaporeans are well-travelled, our palate will be acceptable to different types of cuisine. Famous Kitchen is recommended by the 2019 edition MICHELIN Guide Singapore.

Our Food with Traditional Curry Fish Head

TFK has recently expanded its delivery service to Island Wide. We were invited to try out the Delivery Menu.

Crabmeat with Fish Maw Soup ($12 per portion). The broth is thick, robust with a hint of sweetness from the crab meat. The soup is generously filled with fish maw, crab meat, sliced mushroom and drizzle with egg. Each portion can easily share by 2 persons.

Crabmeat with Fish Maw Soup

Braised Pork Ribs with Lemongrass Plum ($16 / $24 / $32). Juicy and succulent pork ribs well coated with lemongrass plum sauce. The combination of sweet, sour and the lemongrass fragrant aroma is certainly appetizing. I like the watermelon ball as it acts as palate cleanser. Watch out for plum as the cooking seems to intensify the twang in the plum.

Salted Egg Yolk Prawn with Italian Sauce ($27 for 300g / $36 for 400g / $45 for 500g). The prawns are deshelled until the tail, deep-fried and coated with salted egg yolk. The sauce is creamy with a zesty and tangy flavour. We are slightly disappointed with the prawns, as it feels a bit rubbery. I think for delivery, it will be better if they did not deshell the prawns and tossed the deep-fried prawns with the Italian Sauce.

Mixed "Bailing" Mushroom with "Kai Lan" ($12 / $18 / $24). The mushroom is quite Q, yet delicious. Once the mushroom is stir-fried, it exudes silky and creamy juice to accompanied the crunchy and slightly bitter taste kai lan.

Signature Yellow Chives Char Kway Teow ($12 / $18 / $24). This plain-looking char kway teow packs punch. The rice noodle is smooth and silky, as it absorbs the wok-hei. dark soy sauce and sweetness from chives. Yummy!!

Signature Yellow Chives Char Kway Teow

We also take this opportunity to order extra Traditional Curry Fish Head ($28 for half, $50 for whole). A perennial favourite dish in the Nanyang area. The fish head is extremely huge. The curry is closer to the Nyonya version. The curry is rich, creamy and packs with “lemak” that absorbs nicely into the fresh fishhead. The lady’s finger, tomato, eggplant and tau pork (dried bean curd puff) round up this “rice thief” dish nicely.

Traditional Curry Fish Head

We were only able to finished half of the curry fish head and we use it the next morning to eat it with prata. The secret of the best curry is to eat it the next day as the taste has intensified. A perfect companion for rice or prata.

Traditional Curry Fish Head

On a side note, TFK certainly packs the food properly. Each container is wrapped with cling wrap to prevent any spillage and keep the food warm, plus labelled with consumption time as well. They have certainly put in extra effort to ensure giving their customers quality food even though it is a delivery.
