Marmaris – Hidden Treasure in Little India

Marmaris is Authentic Arabic, Mediterranean and Western food in Singapore’s Little India. A quick google search will show that it is one of the highest rating restaurants around Little India. Since we were looking for something different, we decided to check out Marmaris.

Marmaris
When you arrived at the location, you will be greeted by two vertical rotisseries, commonly found in the Middle Eastern grilling the meat. In the middle, there will be the ingredients bench, which looks similar to the one in Subway store, where the staff assemble the shawarma, salads and other items on the menu.

Shawarma
For dine-in, you can go to the 2nd floor. It is air-conditioned and simply furnished with wooden tables and chairs. The lights and the walls are decorated with Middle Eastern lights and Middle Eastern motifs wallpapers. There is also al-fresco seating on the 1st floor.

Decor and Lights
We started the meal with Hummus Salad Platter ($8) – Served with Arabic Bread, Veg Salad and Muhallal – Arabic Pickle. The hummus is smooth, creamy and packs with chickpea flavour. The Arabic bread is warm, soft and pillowy. We just can’t stop scooping the hummus with it. The salad on the side is simple yet refreshing. In no time, we polished off the platter.

Hummus Salad Platter
Falafel (1pcs, $1.50). From the look, we thought it was going to be hard and dry. Surprisingly, it is crispy externally, while it is moist and soft inside. Very good.

Falafel
Al Faham (Grilled Chicken, Signature, $15.50 half, $28 full). We ordered half, as we also ordered a rice dish. According to the menu, the chicken is slow-grilled with special herbs. It is served with Arabic bread, veg salad and garlic sauce.

Al Faham
The exterior of the chicken has a nice charred texture and flavour, followed by juicy and succulent flesh, including the breast part. Though the marinate of the chicken looks fiery red, it was not spicy at all. The chicken is very tasty and the garlic sauce just enhances the flavour of the chicken and herbs further. It is served with lovely Arabic bread as well.

Al Faham
Lamb Shank Briyani ($17.90, 1 pax). I just can’t say NO to a lamb shank briyani. Cooked in a claypot dum, the aroma just entices us when it was brought to our table. Of course, the bone sticking out just add the WOW factor to the dish. The rice is fluffy, sweet and tasty. The lamb shank is juicy and without any gamy flavour, however, it is a bit of a challenge ripping the meat off the bones. I think the lamb shank can be cooked longer, before mixing it with the briyani. My best experience with lamb shank briyani is when the meat reaches the point of fork tender and falls off the bone. I’ll probably order the mutton briyani next time.

We end our meal with Kunafe ($12) - A traditional Middle Eastern dessert made with cheese and thin noodle-like pastry soaked in sweet, sugar-based syrup topped with crushed nuts. I like the crispy texture of the Kunafe, combine with the sweet and savoury flavour in it. The sugar-based syrup is served separately. Though the syrup looks milky, I find it too watery and does not blend well with Kunafe. Instead of pouring the syrup into the pastry, it is better to dip the pastry into the syrup.

Kunafe
We had Mango Lassi ($4.50) and Fresh Lime Soda ($4.50) to accompany our meal. The bottled water is already on the table, so if you open it just let them know when you make the payment on the 1st floor.

Drinks
CBK verdict: it was a great Arabic Middle Eastern food. Very tasty, flavourful and pocket friendly. The winners of the night are the Hummus, the chicken & the garlic sauce. We’ll definitely come back to try the Shawarma and the rest of the dishes. Cheers!!

My Briyani House Marine Cove – Unveiling New Menu [MEDIA INVITE]

Lamb Shank Briyani

My Briyani House is an Indian Restaurant concept by Mr Teh Tarik Group. It serves a wide range of traditional and authentic Indian dishes as well as the iconic Teh Tarik. My Briyani House is also MUIS Halal Certified Restaurant.

My Briyani House @Marine Cove

My Briyani House at Marine Cove just revamps its menu and ready to tantalise our taste buds. The start dish for this new line menu is Lamb Shank Briyani ($13.80 for 1 pc, $25 for 2pcs).

The lamb shank is cooked over a long period as the flesh is almost fork-tender and easily fall off the bone. It is tasty and only has a little gamy taste. The briyani rice is fluffy, al-dente and flavourful. The spices are just right to ignite the aroma instead of overpowering the whole meal. The best part is to dig out for the lamb gravy at the bottom of the briyani rice.

Lamb Shank Briyani

Sambal Prawn ($8). Crispy and crunchy prawns. The sambal sauce has a multilayer and distinct spicy and sweetness. The sambal prawns are good with any type of rice, it can easily be a “rice thief” dish here.

Sambal Prawn

Masala Squid ($8). Aromatic and coated with creamy and delicious masala curry. The squid has a good bite to it, followed with a slight chewiness.

Masala Squid (Left) and Sambal Prawns

Chettinad Chicken ($8). This chicken dish sure packs of punch. The gravy is solid and absorbs well into the flesh. The chicken use is a bit too small for my liking, as the meat tasted a bit firm. The gravy from this chicken and masala squid goes nicely with the Butter Naan ($4).

Chettinad Chicken

The butter naan is aromatic and buttery. I like the chewy bread-like texture and the aromatic butter inside. Of course, it works wonder to polish the gravy from the Chettinad chicken and masala squid.

Butter Naan

Curry Fish Head ($28). The new signature dish here. The fish is fresh and cooked in spicy and tangy curry. There is no coconut milk inside this curry, so the curry fish head does not feel heavy. The curry spices stand out, together with a tangy and spicy flavour. In case you are wondering, the curry fish head is catered to Singaporean taste as the recipe was finetuned by Mr Mok, the owner of Mr Teh Tarik Group.

Curry Fish Head

Other than the briyani, we ate the fish head curry with the plain prata ($1.40, min 2 pcs). The plain prata is crisp and fully and if you let it swim in the curry fish head, it is a perfect vessel to savour the curry fish head.

Curry Fish Head

Vegetarian Briyani ($7.50). This vegetarian briyani is a medley of flavour and texture. The rice is fluffy and al-dente, accompanied by crunchy and juicy vegetables. The sweet flavour extracted from the vegetables together and spices just work wonder. As there is no meat in this briyani, this dish feels light and you won’t feel guilty when you scoop more of it.

Vegetarian Briyani

Side dishes that we tried include Papadum, Lady Finger Poriyal ($2) and Mixed Vegetable Thoran ($2). The mixed vegetable is sweet and crunchy. Combine with the attractive fresh colour, it is easily paired with white rice of briyani.

Mixed Vegetable Thoran and Papadum

I can’t comment much on the Lady Finger Poriyal, as I did not taste it. Lady finger just not of my liking. Papadum is crunchy with the right saltiness.

Our Meal, Lady Finger Poriyal at top roght

Of course, the meal here won’t be complete without the Signature Ice Teh Tarik ($2.50). Smooth milky texture followed with a strong tea flavour. Yummy!!

Signature Iced Teh Tarik

The décor of My Briyani House is simple, almost like a food court style. The place is very spacious and one of the attractions here is the kids’ corner. It is open 24 hours, so you can enjoy it any time of the day.

Overall, I like the new menu of My Briyani House. It combines the popular Authentic Indian dishes with local dishes as well. There have been improvements compare to the last time I was here for my prata fix. Do take note that this new menu is only applied to My Briyani House @Marine Cove. Cheers!!

Cook & Brew – New Dishes For The Festive Season 2017 [MEDIA INVITE]

Nova Scotia Lobster and Avocado Toast

We are back at Cook & Brew, the Westin Singapore's speciality gastro-bar for the unveiling of new dishes for this festive season by Chef Aaron Foster and his team. Little Devil and I have been to Cook and Brew on a few occasions and we are always impressed by the food served here.

Whipped Buffalo Milk Ricotta Cheese ($15), the perennial favourite in Cook and Brew. The ricotta cheese is creamy and mild. The infusion of truffle honey added sweet and aromatic touch to the cheese. Spread it over the crisp yet chewy grilled bread, making it a good finger food. Knowing it is going to be plenty of food for the night, I stop myself from having a second helping.

Whipped Buffalo Milk Ricotta Cheese

Barbecue Turkey Meatballs ($16). Turkey Meatballs has been a Cook and Brew menu as far as I can remember. This time around, Chef upsize the meatballs. The barbecue sauce added the sweet and tanginess to the succulent meatballs. For contrasting crispy texture, you can nibble on the chips.

Pastilla Café – Moroccan Cuisine Delights [CLOSED]

Pastilla Café

Pastilla Café is an unique establishment that served traditional Moroccan cuisine and Mediterranean Cuisine as well. Owned by Chef Said Ibrahimi, a born Moroccan which previous stint includes Pasha at Sultan Hotel, thus there is no one else better to introduce Moroccan cuisine to us than him. As I never had Moroccan dishes before, this is going to be a unique experience.

Part of Dining Area

We started the dinner with Merguez ($9.50). Grilled homemade lamb sausage, which was tender but dense. The lamb sausage seasoning of paprika, cumin and coriander are pretty strong so it cover any gamy flavour from the lamb. Served with flat bread, we roll the flat bread with the sausage making it a sausage roll. The bell pepper sauce for dipping similar to our sambal. The bell pepper had went through the process of grilling, thus it tasted tangy with a smoky flavour but it is not spicy. It suited to my taste.

[CLOSED] Thr3e Bistro : Drink, Dine and Chill [MEDIA INVITE]

Thr3e Bistro
Thr3e Bistro ('TB'), a unique F&B mashup concept between a bistro, a wine bar and a restaurant. Not sure what you will call it, but I categorised it as Gastropub. One thing about TB, it does not conform to a normal standard norm to one classification of F&B industries. Instead the passionate owners set their sight on what they want to see their place and transform it to suit their target customers.

Chill Out Area
In TB, you can have the option of seating in a comfortable chic sofa with luxurious coffee tables to sip your wine, beer and finger foods; or a proper dining tables to tuck in to selections of delectable food. On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening, there will be live band to set the atmosphere at TB. It also provide a nice environment to hold a private function and parties.

Georges By The Bay – A Beach Bar not a GastroPub

Georges By The Bay

Georges is a Balinese theme inspired beach bar which started as a beverage kiosk at a small sea sport centre in Pasir Ris Park. Over time it evolves and started serving western grill. The first official gastropub opened its door in Siglap in 2004 and recently, it just opened its outlet in The Punggol Settlement.

The View

In the 80's and early 90's, this Punggol area was one of the hottest spot for dining destination, especially for seafood lovers. However, all of the restaurants has to relocate or close down in 1994 due to land acquisition by the government. It seems that government project did not work out as planned, and with the rapid development of public and private housing in Punggol area, a public tender was called in 2012. Fragrance Group developed a new two story building to bring back the life in the area.
