Diamond Kitchen – Crab Party [MEDIA INVITE]

Black Pepper Crab @ Dimond Kitchen

Calling Crab Lovers, Diamond Kitchen is having their crab promotions. 3 Sri Lankan Crab per Set, they can cook in more than 20 different styles and priced between $49.90 to $55.90. This crab promotions is available until 31 January 2021.

Crab promo Menu
We tried 3 different cooking style of crabs starting with Mongolian Crab. My first time trying this style of crab. The crabs are fresh and juicy cooked in Mongolian style sauce, which has a touch creaminess, peppery and a hint of curry powder. It is unique and I don’t mind ordering this again.

Mongolian Crab

Mongolian Crab
Salted Egg Yolk Crab (Dry). The crabs are coated with salted egg yolk batter and deep-fried till the batter is crispy. Though the salted egg coating is nice, the crabs spend a bit too much time in the frying oil, resulting in slight dryness in the meat. For Sri Lankan crabs, I would prefer the Salted Egg Yolk Wet version.

Salted Egg Yolk Crab (Dry)
For Salted Egg Yolk Crab dry version, Diamond Kitchen (“DK”) can consider using soft-shell crabs instead of Sri Lankan crabs. The soft-shell crab won’t take long to cook and the combination of sweet juicy flesh with crispy salted egg yolk coating will be amazing. This dish will also attract those customers that do not like to get their fingers. I am just salivating thinking about this.

Salted Egg Yolk Crab (Dry)
Black Pepper Crab. The most memorable crab dish for the night. The crabs are sweet and fresh, blend nicely with the black pepper sauce packs with a solid peppery flavour. One word to describe it, Yummy!

Black Pepper Crab
Champagne Pork Ribs ($24 for Medium). A signature dish of DK. The boneless pork ribs are crisp and juicy, evenly coated with caramelised champagne sauce. The sauce is sweet and refreshing at the same time.

Champagne Pork Ribs

Champagne Pork Ribs
La la Bee Hoon ($24 for Medium). Smooth and silky bee hoon cooked with clam infused broth. The soup is naturally sweet and absorbs into the bee hoon. DK version of la la bee hoon is very generous with the pepper, delivering a nice warm flavour in each slurp of the broth. A very comforting dish, especially during this rainy season.

La La Bee Hoon

La La Bee Hoon
Three Egg Spinach ($21 for Medium). One of my favourite spinach dishes. The broth is robust, while three eggs covered most of the surface of this dish. The wolfberry added a nice touch of sweetness in this savoury dish.

Three Egg Spinach

Three Egg Spinach
Pumpkin Beancurd ($21for Medium). A very tasty tofu dish. The tofu is smooth, silky and delicate. The pumpkin sauce is robust, creamy and infused with seafood flavour. A surprising burst of flavour in this ordinary-looking dish.

Pumpkin Beancurd

Pumpkin Beancurd
Beef Hor fun ($10 for small). A traditional beef hor fun style, plated in rustic style. The gravy is very solid and the portion is very generous. However, the hor fun lacks the wok hei x-factor, plus some part of the noodle is lumpy and not silky.

Beef Hor Fun
Pumpkin & Gingko Yam Paste ($16 for small). A tasty thick yam paste. The pumpkin slices and gingko provided a contrasting flavour to the yam paste. Meanwhile the coconut cream slightly diluted, I was hoping that it is thicker and creamier.

Due to the safe distancing measure, the restaurant setting becomes very spacious. The place is brightly lit and the use of white table cloth and golden colour chairs allow to create a modern Chinese restaurant setup. Located in Laguna Park Condominium make the restaurant isolated, however, through its delicious dishes, it has attracted a long list of loyal customers.

Overall, the current Sri Lankan crab promotions are value for money. Most of their dishes are well executed and delivery solid flavours. Don’t expect a creative fusion cuisine, instead look forward to comforting Chinese cuisine. Cheers!!

Thank you very much, Kristine and Diamond Kitchen Team for hosting us.

The Parlour Mirage – Good Food X Good Beer [MEDIA INVITE]

Yakitori Platter @ The Parlour Mirage

The Parlour Mirage is a craft beer taproom / restaurant that recently opens along Owen Road at Farrer Park neighbourhood. The Parlour Mirage (‘TPM’) is on a quest to serve uproarious fusion cuisine and dream-essenced craft beers where you least expected.

The Parlour Mirage

The craft beers on the tap are carefully curated based on their unique taste profile, brewery and most of them are highly rated in Untappd, App usually used by those beer connoisseurs. To partner, the craft beer is the culinary delight inspired by modern Japanese and Mediterranean cuisine, helmed by all-femme kitchen.

Staircase to 2nd Floor
While the gastronomic adventure is happening on the1st floor, TPM is part of a greater ecosystem. In collaboration with The Parlour Singapore, located on the 2nd floor, a newly opened artist hub that houses music studio, creative studios and more, founded by artist, Jaye. It is a conducive environment for artists to learn, create, produce and share. There is also an Ableton Certified Training Centre and Second Life the flea market. The overall setup is just super cool.

Music Studio

Ableton Certifed Training Centre

Second Life the flea market
Back to the 1st floor, we started our tasting with Chicken Karaage ($12). Huge chunks of chicken thigh marinated in sake, sugar, soy sauce, ginger and garlic, then deep-fried to perfection. The exterior is crispy, while the interior is juicy and succulent. I can taste the marinate in the flesh. Though it is served in mayonnaise, I feel the chicken is tasty enough on its own.

Chicken Karaage

Chicken Karaage
Fried Cheese ($10). It looks like tater tots; however, this little bite-size popcorn is filled with aged cheddar. Crispy exterior followed with a strong aged cheddar cheese flavour. If you don’t like the strong flavour of cheese, you might want to give this a miss.

Fried Cheese

Fried Cheese
Yakitori Platter, [clockwise from top left] consist of Eggplant ($4.50), Pork Belly ($6.50), Salmon Belly ($9.50), Chicken Thigh ($4.50), Hokubee Beef Cubes ($9.5), King Oyster Mushroom ($6.50), Quail Eggs ($4.50), Okra ($4.50). US Scallop ($9.50) and Tsukune ($6.50).

Yakitori Platter

Yakitori Platter
The Yakitori is actually a perfect pairing with the craft beer. Alas, I am unable to consume alcohol, so I have to stick with my ice water.

Devil’s Peak Lager (South Africa) & Heretic Caramel Moo’chiato (USA)

My picks for the yakitori are: tsukune, these mince chicken balls are juicy and succulent. Grilled perfectly, resulting in the melts in your mouth sensation. The fattiness from the salmon belly produces a crisp yet flaky bite of the salmon flesh.

Tsukune

Salmon Belly
Meanwhile, the texture of King Oyster Mushrooms with the sweet yakitori sauce is just irresistible. The okra yakitori taste really surprised me. Frankly, I am not an okra fan, however, the version here is slightly charred and delivery a crisp texture absents of the gooey texture that I dislike most. Yum yum.

King Oyster Mushroom

Okra
Instead of ordering the yakitori individually, it will be more worth it to order the platter.

Staircase to 3rd floor

Studio Stools
Served together with the yakitori platter is sharing plate of pita and dips platter. Consist of [from top anti-clockwise] Guacamole, Hummus, Pesto, Tzaziki, Fried Mantou, Asian Slaw, Pita Bread and Sweet Butter Corn. Frankly, my first impression is that the balance is out of whack as there are more dips compared to the pita bread and fried mantou. Later on, it was explained to us that the dips are to be paired with the yakitori as well. Now, it makes sense.

Pita & Dips Platter
I like the unique brown colour pesto and Asian slaw made from purple cabbage. Both dishes offer a unique twist of flavour, yet helps to offset the fattiness from the yakitori. The sweet butter corn is delicious; however, the portions are just too small even for 1 person including the pita bread as well.

If you need something more filling, TPM also offers donburi. Hokubee Beef Don ($24). The Hokubee Meltique Beef offer a nice smoky aroma and juicy beef texture, while the Kombu Cream with homemade pickled radish, chopped spring onion and soft boiled egg deliver a creamy umami flavour with a touch of tanginess.

Hokubee Beef Don
We end the meal with Stracciatella ($15). A soft Italian cheese using buffalo milk, mixed with honey, nuts, grilled sweet corn and grilled plum. An explosion of flavours in your mouth. Sweet, savoury, crunchy, smoky, crisp and creamy. Although this dish is geared towards a savoury dish, I think this will work well for desserts.

Stracciatella

Stracciatella
The dĂ©cor of TPM was inspired by Japan’s gold-accented Tottori dessert and beige dunes. The word Mirage in the restaurant name can be attributed to the Mirage sighting in the dessert. Though the restaurant is filled with a rich gold colour, you will feel at ease as due to the balance colour combination. Of course, the 12 craft beer taps under the Singapore palm tree logo will be the centre of TPM universe.

The Parlour Mirage

Overall, the Japanese x Mediterranean cuisine at The Parlour Mirage is geared as a perfect companion for the craft beers. The Yakitori, Chicken Karaage and Stracciatella are a must-try here. Cheers!!

[CLOSED] Ubi Chomp Chomp – Delicious Braised Duck

Braised Duck - Half

I was introduced to this place by A for a lunch meet up. The owner of the shop is someone who has been in F&B business in Singapore and China for more than 20 years. Since A is familiar with the food here, he takes charge of the ordering.

Ubi Chomp Chomp

Ubi Chomp Chomp
Braised Duck ($14 half / $28 whole). The flesh is juicy, succulent and well infused with the braising stock. The skin of the duck is smooth and bouncy while the thick gooey sauce poured on top of the dish delivering the umami flavour that rounds up the dish. Yummy.

Braised Duck - Half
Soy Chicken ($9 half / $18 whole). The thigh and drumstick meat are juicy and succulent, while the skin is just irresistible. However, I feel the breast meat is on the firm side and a bit dry. If they can improve the breast meat texture, it is something to keep a lookout for. Not as good as the duck.

Soy Chicken - Half

Soy Chicken - Half
Mix plater of Tofu ($0.70), Egg ($0.50), Fish cake ($0.80), Tau pok ($0.50). A delicious combination of sides. I like the tofu best as it is smooth and infused with the braising stock. For those who like pigskin, you can give it a try as well.

Side Dishes
For the chilli, my makan kakis say “Got Power”.

Side Dishes
Instead of regular white rice, I decided on Braised Pork Rice ($2.50). It is slightly different from the Taiwanese version. The version here uses long grain rice and loaded with chopped onions compare to the Taiwanese version.

Braised Pork Rice
This bowl of rice and chopped pork belly are packed with flavours. The fats from the pork belly melt in your mouth and the chopped onions added a delicate sweetness to this dish. Don’t let the pale looking braised egg fooled you, it is well infused with the braising sauce.

Picture Menu
Other than the dishes that I tried above, Ubi Chomp Chomp also offer mala duck (their own recipe). For breakfast, they have duck porridge and duck mee sua. Not a fan of mala stuff, but I will definitely return to try their breakfast menu in the future.

Price List
It is an eating house setting, so it is all about the food. Place your order at the counter, make payment and they will deliver your order afterwards.

CBK Verdict: The Braised pork a must-order dish here together with the braised duck. The soy sauce chicken is not as good as the braised duck but it is not too bad. If you are around Ubi area, give Ubi Chomp Chomp Braised Duck & Soy Chicken a try. Cheers!

Thank you, A, for introducing this makan place.

COSMO PRIME Air Purifier [MEDIA DROP]

Cosmo Prime Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA Filter

We are very fortunate that in Singapore enjoy better air quality compared to many cities in Asia. This is due to the intelligent city planning by our Singapore government. However, from time to time, there are external factors that affect our air quality, such as forest fire, smoke from our burning rituals and even second-hand smoke. Internally, we also experience unpleasant odour in our house as well.

The Packaging
Although it is as simple as closing our windows and turning on our air conditioner or spraying some air freshener, it does not settle the air pollutants problem. With the rainy season upon us, it is also easy for our room to get unpleasant odour due to the wet towels.

Cosmo Prime Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA Filter
As I stayed in a low floor HDB, the external odour from the nearby rubbish chute and delivery trucks easily penetrate into our room. Thus we have a habit of using a scented candle to help remove any unpleasant odour in our bedroom. When I recently received my Cosmo Prime Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA Filter, I decided to try it in my bedroom immediately.

The Back Cover

3-in-1 HEPA Filter with Plastic Packaging
Setting up the machine is very simple. You open the back cover of the machine, take out the 3-in-1 HEPA Filter, remove the plastic and put the filter back and the back cover as well. Once you plug in the power cable, it is ready to go.

Cosmo Prime Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA Filter

3-in-1 HEPA Filter
Once you press the ON button, the machine started its pre-heating period for 30 seconds. During this time, the LED Air Quality indicator lights on top will change from Blue – Cyan – Green – Yellow – Orange – Red – Purple, as it detects the air quality in the room. After the pre-heating period it the LED Air Quality lights will indicate the air quality in the room. Our room falls on blue, so it represents good air quality.

I leave my room and let Cosmo Prime Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA Filter run for 10 minutes. When I return, the damp odour has disappeared and the air feels odourless. I find the machine helpful and it is quieter compare to the standing fan in my living room. The machine itself is very light, less than 5kg. It also comes with a top handle, so you can easily move it to another room when needed.

Blue Light - Good Air Quality
Other than setting the Wind Speed function on the Air Purifier, you can also set the timer, light or even link it to WiFi for remote access. It also has a child lock to prevent our curious little one to change the settings of the machine.

The Control Panel
What are the plus points of Cosmo Prime Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA Filter:
  1. It comes with Medical Grade 3-IN-1 H13 HEPA Filter (filters 99.97% of all air pollutants like pollen, dust, bacteria, tobacco smoke and more). It also comes with PM2.5 Counter.
  2. It is designed to work almost in complete silence. At a record noise level of 20dB, it is even quieter than my fan.
  3. Futuristic Design, with Aerodynamic 360° design for air purification in all directions.
  4. High Coverage Area: Up to 80m².
  5. It comes with 5 Year Warranty.
Cosmo Prime® Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA filter is priced at $538.00 It currently on Final Year -End sale, you can get it at $399.00. You can purchase it here

CBK Verdict: If you are looking for Air Purifier, you must consider Cosmo Prime Air Purifier + 3-in-1 HEPA Filter. It is well designed, silent and also value for money. I am very happy with mine. Cheers!!
